What Fenerbahce’s latest transfer decision means for Calvin Bassey’s future

Former Turkish Süper Lig champions Fenerbahçe have been linked with Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey this summer, Afrik-Foot reports..

Speculation surrounding Bassey’s future has intensified as he enters the final two years of his contract at Fulham.

Since joining the Cottagers three years ago, the 26-year-old has established himself as the main man in their defense, producing top performances performances. Two seasons ago, that even earned him the club’s Player of the Season award.

Last season, Bassey remained a constant fixture for Fulham, featuring in 30 Premier League matches and contributing one assist.

His defensive statistics were quite impressive, as he averaged 71 touches per game, maintained an 88% pass accuracy, and recorded 2.1 tackles and 3.3 clearances per match.

Despite his rugged approach, he was still disciplined, as he received only five yellow cards throughout the entire campaign.

Fenerbahçe Make Transfer Move

Bassey’s consistent displays naturally attracted interest from abroad. Fenerbahçe, in particular, were heavily linked with the defender, with reports suggesting club officials had traveled to England to initiate negotiations. However, those discussions failed to yield a concrete breakthrough.

In the meantime, the Yellow Canaries have made a key move that significantly impacts Bassey’s prospects.

The chances of a transfer have slimmed down following the club’s successful signing of Nathan Aké from Manchester City.

Afrik-Foot understands that Aké was Fenerbahçe’s main target, and they were only expected to pursue Bassey had that deal failed.

With the Dutch defender now headed to Istanbul, Fenerbahçe are expected to officially end their pursuit of Bassey.

What’s Next for Bassey?

As it stands, no other top European clubs have been formally credited with interest in the Super Eagles defender, which is somewhat surprising, given his proven quality.

However, the transfer market remains highly fluid, and circumstances can change quickly as clubs adjust their squads.

Given his Premier League experience and defensive caliber, Bassey will undoubtedly remain on the radar of several sides.

For now, he is set to focus on the upcoming season at Fulham, where he will be looking to impress a potential new manager in Álvaro Arbeloa.
