Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has heaped praise on Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman following the forward's sensational performance in the club’s recent 6-1 victory over Hellas Verona.
Lookman, whose game has grown remarkably since joining Atalanta, delivered a captivating display during their home game on Saturday, but Gasperini hints that there's an even greater story behind his recent form.
After a strong start to the game, Lookman showed why he’s a force to be reckoned with, setting up two goals in just 14 minutes as Atalanta surged to a commanding lead.
With two goals of his own in quick succession soon after, the 27-year-old winger closed out the first half at an incredible 5-0, proving his worth as a key player for Atalanta.
Yet, despite his dominant presence on the pitch, Gasperini decided to take off the Nigerian international in the 56th minute, perhaps preserving his energy for future clashes.
But then, this did little to lessen the impact of Lookman's contribution, as he was rightly named Man of the Match after the final whistle.
Atalanta coach hails explosive Lookman after dominant win
Gasperini couldn’t hide his admiration for Lookman, acknowledging the forward’s steady growth and newfound strength.
He revealed that Lookman struggled after the Africa Cup of Nations, yet he has “exploded” into a remarkable player who now even impresses both his fans and critics.
“Lookman and De Ketelaere have grown; this year they are much stronger players. After the Africa Cup of Nations, Lookman had a difficult period, then he exploded, and now he is at those levels,” Gasperini said.
With eight goal involvements in six Serie A matches, Lookman’s form has helped lift Atalanta to fourth in the league.
As he continues to shine for club and country, many speculate he could be the favourite to grab the CAF Player of the Year award.
