Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has provided an encouraging update on Taiwo Awoniyi’s condition after the Super Eagles forward picked up an injury during the Tricky Trees' FA Cup victory over Exeter City on Tuesday.

Awoniyi was stretchered off following a prolonged stoppage just before the end of regulation time after a heavy collision with Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth.

The Nigerian striker, who had earlier netted his second goal of the season, sustained a concussion and a broken nose in the incident.

In the aftermath of the game, the Portuguese manager moved to ease concerns over Taiwo Awoniyi’s condition following his injury, assuring that the striker has been assessed and is in good spirits.

“It was a concussion and I think he broke his nose,” Nuno said of Awoniyi, as reported by Nottingham Post.

“He is in a lot of pain but has a smile on his face because he did an amazing job and scored for us, which we were delighted about. He has already been checked and is OK to travel (back).”

The 27-year-old has found game time hard to come by this season, having lost his starting spot to Chris Wood. He has featured in 21 matches across all competitions, with only four starts, and has registered two goals.

Earlier in the winter transfer window, Awoniyi was linked with a move away from Forest in pursuit of more playing time, with West Ham and Everton reportedly showing interest. However, no deal materialised as Nuno remained determined to keep him at the club.
