Azeez: Ex-England forward urges Millwall to make key decision on Super Eagles newcomer

Published on by

Former England and Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has issued a strong warning to Millwall over the future of Super Eagles debutant Femi Azeez, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old joined Millwall in the summer of 2024, but a standout 2025–26 campaign has brought him into the spotlight, with several Premier League clubs reportedly monitoring him ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Azeez registered 11 goals and eight assists in 35 appearances in the EFL Championship this season, helping the Lions reach the playoff semi-finals before they were eventually beaten by Hull City, missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

He was also named in the Championship Team of the Season following his impressive performances for the club.

The England-born forward has since made his international debut for Nigeria after receiving a maiden call-up for the Unity Cup under head coach Eric Chelle. He marked his debut in style, scoring a brilliant brace in a 2–0 win over Zimbabwe on Tuesday, which sent the Super Eagles into the final of the tournament.

Millwall warned against Femi Azeez’s transfer this summer

Femi Azeez’s performances for Millwall in the Championship have not gone unnoticed, with the Super Eagles star attracting interest from several top clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, although they are not under pressure to sell, as he remains under contract until 2028.

Newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town reportedly had a £20 million bid rejected for the Nigerian forward earlier this week and while they are expected to return with an improved offer, other clubs including Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Sunderland are also believed to be monitoring the situation.

However, former England international Kevin Phillips has advised Millwall against selling Azeez, emphasizing his importance to the team as they look to push for Premier League promotion next season.

“Absolutely not. There’s no way”, the former Sunderland forward told Southwark News.

“That just shows you ambition, doesn’t it? If you’re going to sanction a move for one of your best players, got eleven goals, he’s only 24, perfect age, then you’re kind of showing you’re not really ambitious to go again.

“So no, I wouldn’t sanction it. If you had to, you’d be looking for around ten to fifteen million quid that someone might be prepared to pay. But certainly, I wouldn’t sell him.”

Following an impressive debut for the Super Eagles, Femi Azeez will return to action this weekend when they face Jamaica in the final of the Unity Cup, with Nigeria hoping to continue their dominance in the competition.
