“Barcelona, not built on chaos” – Brazil legend warns Osimhen against Camp Nou move

Brazil legend Romário has openly questioned whether Victor Osimhen has the technical qualities needed to succeed at FC Barcelona, Afrik-Foot reports.

This is as the Nigerian striker continues to attract attention ahead of one of the most important transfer windows of his career.

Barcelona are searching for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski after the veteran striker spent four successful seasons at the Catalan club. Osimhen’s name has been discussed internally because of his performances in Italy and Turkey, where he helped Galatasaray enjoy another title-winning campaign.

But Romario believes Barcelona’s style of football could expose weaknesses in the Super Eagles forward’s game.

“People love hype more than football now. That’s the problem. You mention Barcelona and suddenly everyone forgets what it actually takes to play there,” Romario told Sport Diarios as per ScoreNigeria.

“Barcelona has a very clear identity, and not every good striker fits that identity. That’s the part fans keep ignoring.”

The former Brazil striker, who starred for Barcelona during the 1993-94 season, argued that Osimhen’s strengths are built around speed, aggression and attacking open spaces rather than the controlled possession football Barcelona traditionally demand from their forwards.

“Let’s start with Victor Osimhen. Fantastic athlete, aggressive, scores goals, I respect that. But Barcelona is not a team that lives off chaos, and his game is built on chaos,” he explained.

Romario’s criticism focused heavily on Osimhen’s technical play in tight areas. He believes the Nigerian’s first touch and link-up ability could become a major problem in a side built around quick combinations and patient build-up football.

“When you watch him closely, the first touch is not always clean, and at Barça, that’s already a problem. One heavy touch, one loose control, and the entire rhythm of the team is broken.”

He continued: “Then there’s the link-up play. At Barcelona, your striker is not just finishing chances, he’s part of the midfield in many moments.

“Can Osimhen consistently drop, combine in tight spaces, play quick one-twos under pressure? Not at the level Barcelona demands.”

Romario also pointed to the tactical reality of playing for Barcelona in La Liga. Many opponents defend deep against the Spanish champions, leaving little room for forwards who prefer running behind defensive lines.

“He’s more comfortable attacking space, running in behind, using his physicality. But what happens when there is no space? Because at Barcelona, there is rarely space.”

Chelsea, Real Madrid and Galatasaray battle for Osimhen future

Despite Romario’s doubts, Osimhen remains one of the most wanted strikers in Europe after another prolific season.

Barcelona are not the only club interested in the 27-year-old Nigerian, with the Spanish La Liga giants also monitoring Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez and Chelsea’s João Pedro.

Interestingly, Chelsea are also being linked with a move for Osimhen, especially with Xabi Alonso expected to officially begin work on July 1. Chelsea view Osimhen as the striker capable of solving their long-running problems in attack, although his yearly wage demands reportedly remain a serious challenge.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have emerged as another possible destination. The Spanish giants are still searching for a dominant central striker following the departure of Karim Benzema. Football insiders believe Osimhen’s arrival would allow Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior to operate more naturally from wide attacking positions.

Staying in Istanbul also remains a realistic option. Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek has made it clear the Turkish champions do not want to lose their star striker this summer. Unless a club pays the at least €100 million, Galatasaray are expected to reject negotiations.

Interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich also continues in the background, while Atletico Madrid are monitoring developments despite concerns over whether they can compete financially with Premier League clubs or Galatasaray.
