Barcelona vs Aston Villa preview, h2h team news, & tips: Will Nigeria’s fufu man shine?

Published on by

Spanish giants Barcelona face a big test on Tuesday as they welcome English side Aston Villa to Camp Nou for their highly anticipated UEFA Champions League clash.

Nicolas Jackson, the Senegal striker, scored both goals in Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Manchester City on October 24, and he carries that form into a Champions League night at Camp Nou. Barcelona, on the other chance will be looking to prove that their explosive start to season, which was dented by losses to PSG and Real Madrid, was not a fluke.

Villa arrive on Tuesday with a perfect league-phase record, while Barcelona, eighth on six points, are missing four defenders as they chase a top-eight finish.

Can Nigeria’s Fufu Man Shine Against Villa?

Barcelona’s fufu man is Karim Adeyemi, and he is in the run-in to start against Aston Villa on Tuesday. He got that tag after he posted videos of himself eating fufu and introducing his former Borussia Dortmund teammates to it.

He just joined the Catalans from Dortmund in a €22 million deal in the summer, and he has contributed four goals and three assists in 14 appearances. He currently plays for the German national team, but he has Nigerian roots.

He has a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother, but he was born in Germany. However he snubbed the first two in favour of Diemannschaft.

Adeyemi has adjusted to like in Catalunya seamlessly, and if he starts against the Villains, he could cause serious problems for them with his pace and trickery on the ball.

Villa won 3-2 away to Club Brugge, 6-0 against Fenerbahce and 3-1 against Viking, and their 12 league-phase goals are bettered only by the 14 of Paris Saint-Germain.

The league phase has been the best part of Villa’s season so far, with John McGinn, Emiliano Buendia and Jackson putting them 3-1 up by half time in Belgium, and their one European defeat was the 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on August 12.

Jackson joined from Chelsea in August after spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich, and he has scored eight goals in 12 appearances for Villa in all competitions.

Domestic results have been less tidy, with a 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat away to Bournemouth on October 28 and a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham three days later.

Unai Emery’s side have kept one clean sheet in their last five games, away to Newcastle United on October 17, and have conceded in the other four.

Barcelona won their first 11 matches of the season before losing 4-2 away to Paris Saint-Germain on October 20 and 2-1 at home to Real Madrid on October 25.

They answered with a 6-1 win over Alaves on October 31, in which Raphinha and Lamine Yamal each scored twice.

Barcelona have scored 40 goals and conceded 16 in their last 10 matches in all competitions, and Hansi Flick has made a top-eight finish the target.

Their next game after Villa is a trip to Atletico Madrid on November 8, though Flick insists the full focus this week is on the Champions League.

Barcelona vs Aston Villa Head-to-Head Record

Barcelona and Villa have met four times, with two wins for the Spanish club, one for Villa and one draw, and they have not played each other since 1983.

Barcelona edged a 1978 UEFA Cup quarter-final 4-3 on aggregate, before Villa won the 1982 Super Cup 3-1 on aggregate, the second leg ending 3-0 after extra time at Villa Park on January 26, 1983.

That history offers little guide to Tuesday, but two Villa players carry personal records from other clubs, as Leon Goretzka won his first four Champions League games against Barcelona with Bayern Munich and Pau Torres lost seven of eight against them with Villarreal.

Flick has described having four players out in defence as far from normal, with Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia and Xavi Espart all unavailable alongside the attacking midfielder Dani Olmo.

Christensen trained on Sunday but only on positional work, and Flick said the club must wait until the weekend to know more about his return.

Frenkie de Jong started at centre-back and Brian Farinas at right-back against Alaves, so the Barcelona coach has options beyond Gerard Martin and Alejandro Balde.

Raphinha is available after his two goals against Alaves and is expected to lead the line.

Villa are without Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Emery has no other fresh injury concerns.

Goretzka made his first Premier League start against Fulham and may make way for Joao Gomes, while Buendia is in line to replace Alysson.

Star Player Comparison: Lamine Yamal vs Nicolas Jackson

The figures cover the Champions League only, where Jackson, who signed from Chelsea in August, has outscored Yamal while Yamal has set up four goals to his none.

Yamal will be 19 years and 113 days old on matchday and has scored 13 Champions League goals before turning 20, level with Kylian Mbappe, so one more would take the record outright.

Flick, the German coach, described Emery on Monday as one of the best coaches in Europe and praised the defensive structure of his Villa side.

He has also set Barcelona’s season targets as winning La Liga and the Champions League, which explains why he rejected the idea that two defeats should define a team that started with 11 wins.

Emery, the Spanish coach, led Villa to last season’s Europa League title with a 3-0 win over Freiburg in the final, and he returns to a ground where his Paris Saint-Germain side lost 6-1 in 2017.

Tactical Preview: Where Villa Can Hurt Barcelona

Both sides are expected to start in a 4-2-3-1, which sets Pedri and Rodri against Boubacar Kamara and Gomes in the middle, with the wide areas the likelier source of space.

Villa’s best route is an early one, as they showed by scoring three first-half goals away to Club Brugge, with Jackson scoring before the break there and twice in the first half against Fenerbahce.

Barcelona will look to Yamal against Ian Maatsen on that flank, where the Villa left-back has Ruggeri unavailable behind him.

Anthony Gordon, the England winger who joined Barcelona from Newcastle United in the summer, expects a physical test and has described Villa as one of the most physical teams in the Premier League.

Villa can also hurt Barcelona from deep, as Torres has two assists in three league-phase games, a return that is unusual for a centre-back.

Score Prediction

Barcelona 3 – 1 Aston Villa
Villa should find a way through a Barcelona defence that has conceded in each of its last five games, but Yamal, Raphinha and Fermin Lopez carry more attacking quality than a back line without two full-backs can contain. Likely scorers: Lamine Yamal (two), Raphinha and Nicolas Jackson.
