Since Kelechi Nwakali signed with Barnsley in August, fans have been eagerly awaiting the former Arsenal prospect’s first appearance.
However, Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke has explained why the Nigerian midfielder has yet to make his senior debut for the League One side.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Barnsley's clash against Burton Albion, Clarke explained that Nwakali, despite his undeniable talent, is still working to regain full fitness after missing much of preseason due to visa delays.
The midfielder, who signed a three-year deal in August, has been on the sidelines for Barnsley’s last nine matches.
Kelechi Nwakali working towards match fitness
“Kelechi is a mile off, to be honest,” Clarke admitted. “He needs to get fitter, more high-speed distance running, nothing I haven't said to him personally.”
Despite being named on the bench for games against Sheffield United and Crawley Town, Kelechi Nwakali has yet to feature. Clarke emphasized that the midfielder is still adapting to the intensity of English football, which has contributed to the delay in his first-team involvement.
During the international break, the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner played for Barnsley’s U-21s to work on his match sharpness. However, Clarke is cautious, stressing that Nwakali must continue to improve in all areas before he can compete with Barnsley’s well-established midfield.
“We’ve got to understand he’s adapting to the English game, and we’ll keep working away with him,” Clarke added. “Our midfield is a strong area with competition for places, and everyone has to be at it every day.”
Nwakali's last appearance came in May 2024 for Portuguese side GD Chaves. While his debut remains on hold, the hope is that with time and commitment, the Nigerian starlet will soon make his mark at Barnsley.
