Nigerian defender Akpe Victory is on the verge of completing a move to Swiss giants FC Basel, bringing weeks of speculation over his future to an end, Afrik-Foot reports.
Victory has been the subject of growing transfer interest following an impressive second half of the season with Hungarian club Zalaegerszeg. Despite only joining the club in January, the 19-year-old quickly established himself as one of their most reliable defenders.
The youngster slotted seamlessly into the starting lineup and played a key role in Zalaegerszeg’s run to the Hungarian Cup final, where they eventually suffered defeat to Ferencváros.
After weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future, the Nigerian defender now appears set for the next step in his career.

Basel close in on Akpe Victory signing
According to British journalist Ben Jacobs, FC Basel are close to completing the signing of Akpe Victory, with an agreement expected to be finalized soon and they have seen off competition from the likes of Strasbourg, Benfica, Trabzonspor and Rangers.
The Swiss club will pay around €3 million for the defender, while Zalaegerszeg will retain a sell-on percentage as part of the agreement.
Basel had seen two previous bids rejected before returning with an improved offer that has now been accepted and their persistence highlights just how highly they rate the Nigerian youngster.

Why Basel have moved for the Nigerian defender
Basel’s determination to sign Akpe Victory was driven by several factors. One major reason behind their interest is the 19-year-old’s defensive quality and style of play.
Victory has emerged as one of the most highly-rated young defenders available this summer due to his combination of physical presence and technical ability.
Standing at 1.95 metres, he is dominant in aerial duels, strong in tackles and possesses the physical attributes needed to cope with high-level football. His height also makes him a dangerous attacking threat from set-pieces.
Beyond his physical qualities, Victory is comfortable in possession and possesses impressive passing ability. His composure on the ball and willingness to build attacks from the back fits the profile of a modern centre-back, making him an ideal addition to Basel’s defence.
His versatility is another major asset. While he primarily plays as a centre-back, his ability also allows him to operate in defensive midfield when required.
Another major reason behind Basel’s pursuit is Victory’s age and long-term potential. At just 19 years old, he has plenty of time to continue developing and could become a mainstay in the club’s defence for years to come.

The deal also represents smart business and if the Nigerian defender continues on his current trajectory, Basel would not only benefit from his performances on the pitch but could even get a huge profit if he earns a bigger move in the future.
Victory is now set to begin the next chapter of his career in Switzerland, where he will hope to continue his development and establish himself before potentially making an even bigger move in the coming years.
