Victor Boniface’s struggles with the Super Eagles have drawn considerable criticism, with the 23-year-old managing just one goal in 11 appearances for Nigeria.
Despite flashes of his undeniable talent, his overall contributions to the national team have fallen short of expectations, prompting questions about his role and future in the squad.
However, there are strong reasons to remain optimistic about the Bayer Leverkusen forward’s potential to thrive in the green and white jersey, according to club teammate Granit Xhaka.
The Switzerland international pointed out two important mitigating factors for Boniface's rocky start.
Lack of time to adapt and managerial inconsistency
Boniface made his Super Eagles debut in September 2023 during a resounding 6-0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe in Uyo.
In just over a year, Boniface has played under three different head coaches — a clear testament to the instability within Nigeria’s coaching setup.
Portuguese manager José Peseiro, who handed Boniface his debut, departed in February 2024 after leading Nigeria to a second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations. Interim coach Finidi George then took over, only to resign in June after poor results.
Austin Eguavoen has since stepped in and restored some stability, securing AFCON 2025 qualification, but the constant tactical adjustments have left players like Boniface struggling to find consistency.
Xhaka, speaking after Leverkusen’s 5-0 win against RB Salzburg, acknowledged how such instability can affect a player.
“It’s always difficult because you don’t have a lot of time to adapt, enough time to work through the tactical setup every day with the same coach and the same players. But everyone wants to play for their country,” said Xhaka told OmaSports TV.
A proven performer at the top level
While Boniface’s international record, one goal in 11 appearances, leaves room for improvement, his club performances highlight his immense quality. Since joining Bayer Leverkusen, the 23-year-old has become an essential part of Xabi Alonso’s title-winning squad.
In the 2023/24 season, Boniface helped Leverkusen secure an historic Bundesliga and DFB Pokal double, scoring 14 goals in 23 league matches. This season, he has already netted six goals in 10 Bundesliga games, averaging 0.6 goals per match. His ability to consistently get into dangerous positions is reflected in his expected goals (xG) tally of 6.54.
Beyond the numbers, Boniface’s all-round play makes him a valuable asset. He is a relentless runner, capable of linking up play and creating chances for his teammates. His performances at club level show why Xhaka believes he is a “great footballer” and why patience is key for his growth with the Super Eagles.
According to the former Arsenal man, for Boniface, success with the Super Eagles is a matter of time and stability. “For sure, he’ll be important for Nigeria in the future. Stay calm — he’s a great guy and a great footballer. He’ll make the people happy”
