Braga vs Porto: Preview, team news, predictions as Sanusi and Moffi get set for tough test with the Dragons

Published on by

Matchday 27 of the Liga Portugal Betclic 2025–26 brings together two of the most storied clubs in Portuguese football: Braga and Porto.

At the Estádio Municipal de Braga, the Warriors of Minho host a Porto side six points clear at the summit — and Super Eagles players Zaidu Sanusi and Terem Moffi are set to play key roles as Francesco Farioli’s injury-hit Dragons seek to extend their lead in the title race.

Braga arrive buoyed by their progress to the Europa League quarter-finals, overturning a first-leg deficit to thrash Ferencváros 4–0 at the Municipal.

Porto, meanwhile, advanced with a composed 2–0 victory over Stuttgart, keeping their campaign across three fronts on track. Both sides must now manage European fatigue as they meet in a direct league confrontation.

Zaidu Sanusi is a consistent presence in what has become the best defensive unit in the Liga Portugal. Porto have conceded just 10 goals in 26 league games, and the left-back corridor — Sanusi’s domain — has been a key part of that solidity. The Super Eagles player has made 12 Liga Portugal appearances this season, contributing one goal and one assist, and carrying an average FotMob rating of 7.04.

Tactically, Sanusi fits naturally into Farioli’s 4-3-3 system, which demands disciplined positioning from its full backs. Porto’s approach in away matches relies on a mid-to-low defensive block and rapid transitions, and Sanusi’s pace and left-footed delivery make him an outlet in those moments.

Braga’s 3-4-2-1 gives their wing-backs significant freedom to advance, meaning Sanusi is likely to face Víctor Gómez’ overlapping runs throughout the 90 minutes — a test of his defensive discipline and his ability to recover quickly when Porto are caught on the break.

Terem Moffi arrived at Porto on loan from Nice on January 30, 2026, joining as emergency cover following the long-term injuries to Samu Aghehowa and Luuk de Jong. The Super Eagles forward, who made his name in Ligue 1 with Lorient and Nice, brings exactly the profile Farioli needed — a physical, left-footed centre-forward with pace, aerial presence at 1.88m and a proven eye for goal at the top level of European football.

His Liga Portugal minutes have been limited so far — five appearances totalling 101 minutes — but he has already registered one goal in the league and contributed two further strikes in European competition since joining. Farioli is likely to use Moffi from the start or as an early impact substitute at the Municipal de Braga, where Porto will require a physical attacking presence to unsettle the home defence from set pieces and in behind.

With WhoScored identifying finishing as his primary strength, and Braga regularly giving up the first goal at home in tight games, Moffi represents Porto’s most direct threat in attack. If Farioli’s side sit deep and invite pressure, the Calabar-born forward’s ability to hold the ball and bring teammates into play on the break could prove decisive in a match where moments of quality are likely to settle the outcome.

Match Analysis

Porto lead the Liga Portugal with 69 points from 26 games, recording 22 wins, three draws and just one defeat. Their 88 per cent points return represents the most consistent Dragon campaign in recent memory, and their defensive record — 10 goals conceded — is the best in the division.

The data does, however, point to a drop in attacking output in recent months. In February 2026, Porto scored just one goal in each of their three league fixtures, including their sole defeat of the campaign, a 2–1 reverse against Casa Pia.

The long-term absences of Samu Aghehowa — the side’s 13-goal top scorer who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture — and Luuk de Jong, sidelined with a knee injury, have left the front line visibly depleted.

Porto have nonetheless found their rhythm in recent weeks: a 3–1 win over Arouca, a 2–2 draw with Benfica and a 3–0 victory over Moreirense before their European fixtures represent three consecutive wins across all competitions. William Gomes, Terem Moffi and Borja Sainz are competing for attacking roles in the absence of the first-choice strikers.

Braga, fourth with 46 points from 25 games, are in the form of their season. Manager Carlos Vicens’ side have taken five wins from their last eight matches across all competitions, with a Liga Portugal sequence of 3–2 over Vitória de Guimarães, 2–1 at Nacional and a 2–2 draw with Sporting confirming their quality. At the Municipal, they have won seven, drawn three and lost just two, with an unbeaten home run stretching to 10 consecutive games.

Braga’s two points per game at home makes them a formidable host. Porto average 2.62 points per game on the road — an impressive figure by European standards — though that record is being tested as the injury list deepens.

Braga vs. Porto: The Managers

Carlos Vicens took charge of Braga in May 2025 — his first senior managerial role at a top-level club after time in Manchester City’s academy and as a coaching assistant.

The Spanish manager brought a philosophy built around purposeful possession and coordinated pressing. Results took time to materialise, but from January onwards Braga found consistency, particularly in their defensive shape, and have not stopped improving.

Vicens’ capacity to prepare his side for big occasions was underlined in the Europa League comeback against Ferencváros. His decision to change system and increase aggression from the first minute showed tactical flexibility and the confidence to alter a plan mid-campaign.

Francesco Farioli, for his part, has cemented his reputation as one of the most respected managers in European football this season. The Italian, who joined Porto after spells at Ajax and Nice, has implemented an organised defensive structure built around compact lines and quick transitions.

Porto are extraordinarily difficult to beat, and Farioli renewed his contract until 2028 in recognition of that work. His management of a squad operating across league, cup and Europa League — rotating intelligently while maintaining results despite significant absences — has been exemplary.

Tactical Analysis

Braga are expected to line up in their customary 3-4-2-1, the system Vicens has used consistently all season. The three central defenders provide the foundation for the wing-backs to push forward with freedom, while Ricardo Horta and Rodrigo Zalazar operate in the half-spaces behind lone striker Pau Víctor.

The key strength of this shape lies in midfield occupation. With Florian Grillitsch and Jean-Baptiste Gorby (or José Moscardo) in the engine room, Braga look to dictate tempo and control possession.

Horta’s ability to drift between the lines is central to their build-up play — and his current form, with 17 goals in all competitions, makes him the most dangerous player on the pitch.

Porto, in their 4-3-3, will sit in a mid-to-low block and look to hurt Braga on the counter. Without Aghehowa and De Jong, the attacking reference point is improvised — Moffi or Borja Sainz leading the line, with Pepê providing width from the left and William Gomes finding space in behind. Sanusi’s overlapping runs will be carefully managed by Farioli given the risks on the break.

The tactical key may lie in the wing-back duels. If Víctor Gómez and Leonardo Lelo can advance frequently and effectively, they will create overloads that stretch Porto’s back four into unfamiliar territory.

However, the spaces left by those forward runs are exactly what Pepê and William Gomes are built to exploit on the transition.

Porto’s vulnerability without their first-choice attackers is clear: they have created fewer clear-cut chances in recent months and have become more reliant on set pieces and goals from midfielders and defenders. The defensive partnership anchored by Jan Bednarek, however, remains Porto’s most consistent asset.

The captain and creative heartbeat of Braga, Horta is enjoying the finest season of his career. His 7.71 average rating is the highest in the squad, and his two goals in the 4–0 win over Ferencváros underline his capacity to perform when it matters most. Horta is Braga’s all-time top scorer and the player Vicens builds everything around. Porto will need to neutralise him early.

The Polish centre-back has been the pillar of Porto’s exceptional defensive record. Bednarek’s reading of the game and aerial authority have been central to a back line that has allowed just 10 goals in 26 league matches. With Jakób Kiwior doubtful through injury and Nehúen Pérez out for the season, the demands on Bednarek and his defensive partners are greater than ever at a difficult ground.

Braga vs. Porto: Head-to-Head History

Porto dominate the all-time record between these clubs: 36 wins to Braga’s 14, with 14 draws from 64 meetings. The most recent five contests, however, show a more balanced picture, with two wins each and one draw.

In the reverse fixture, Porto won 2–1 at the Estádio do Dragão on November 2, 2025. Aghehowa scored first, Víctor Gómez equalised, then Borja Sainz settled it with 11 minutes remaining. Braga held 69 per cent of the ball that night but Porto were clinical. The previous season’s match at the Municipal ended 1–0 to the home side — a reminder that Braga’ home advantage is real.

Braga held 69 per cent possession that night but Porto were clinical in front of goal. The previous season’s meeting at the Municipal ended 1–0 to Braga, with Ricardo Horta scoring after 17 minutes — a reminder that the home factor remains significant for the Warriors.

“The last six games at the Municipal de Braga have all produced fewer than 2.5 goals — and in only one did both sides find the net.”

Team News and Probable Line-Ups

Braga are without Amine El Ouazzani, who has been sidelined since December with a foot injury, as well as João Carvalho, Jonatas Noro and Jean-Baptiste Gorby. Sikou Niakaté, however, featured in the win over Ferencváros and is expected to be available. Rodrigo Zalazar, who has 21 goals across all competitions this season, is another key figure in form.

Porto face a more challenging injury situation. Aghehowa (anterior cruciate ligament) and De Jong (knee) are out for the remainder of the season.

Nehúen Pérez (Achilles tendon) and Martim Fernandes (plantar fasciitis) also miss out, while Jakób Kiwior is a doubt with a right-thigh muscle injury.

The good news for Farioli is the return of Thiago Silva to training after a period of personal leave; the experienced Brazilian centre-back could bolster a defensive unit that has felt the strain of recent absences.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Porto arrive as slight favourites given their extraordinary consistency all season, but Braga’s home form, the injury crisis in the Porto attack and the historical pattern of low-scoring encounters at the Municipal all create a compelling case for caution.

Best Bet
Porto to Win the First Half
2.98

Porto’s defensive organisation under Farioli often allows them to control games in the opening period. Without their full attacking complement, the Dragons are unlikely to press for goals early — but their defensive solidity tends to deliver clean first-half sheets. At near-3/1, this represents value against a Braga side that tends to grow into matches.

Alternative 1
Porto to Score First
1.87

Despite the injury list, Porto have been reliable at finding an early breakthrough in recent weeks. Braga’s 3-4-2-1 leaves space on the flanks during transitions, and Pepê or William Gomes could exploit that before Vicens’ side settle into their rhythm. Porto have shown they do not need their first-choice forwards to score first.

Alternative 2
Both Teams to Score
1.90

Braga’s current form — five wins in their last eight across all competitions — and the quality of Horta and Zalazar make it difficult to see them going through 90 minutes without troubling Diogo Costa. Porto’s improved offensive output in recent weeks adds further appeal to this market at under 2/1.

Alternative 3
Over 8.5 Corners
1.70

Braga’s possession-based, wide system generates high corner counts at the Municipal. Porto’s tendency to defend deep and attack on the break also tends to force corner situations for the home side. With both teams playing compact, structured football, set-piece scenarios are likely to be plentiful throughout the 90 minutes.

Braga’s home momentum meets Porto’s defensive steel — a share of the spoils looks the likeliest outcome

The Municipal de Braga tends to produce tightly contested encounters between these clubs, and the conditions for this edition are no different. Braga carry genuine momentum and the advantage of a 10-game unbeaten run at their ground; Porto arrive undermanned up front but protected by the best defensive record in Portugal.

Braga are expected to take the lead, most likely from a set piece or a transition in which Horta finds a pocket of space between the lines. Porto should respond in the second half through a Farioli substitution or a moment of individual quality. With Sanusi providing attacking intent down the left and Bednarek anchoring the defensive unit, Porto have the tools to avoid defeat even without their first-choice forwards.

A 1–1 draw would suit neither camp entirely, but it is the result the football most strongly suggests. Braga are unlikely to hold on against a Porto side with title momentum, while the Dragons — without Aghehowa and De Jong — may find it difficult to go in search of a winner on a difficult ground.
