Calvin Bassey to Man United: All we know of Fulham star’s potential Old Trafford move

Manchester United are interested in Calvin Bassey after being impressed by the Fulham defender’s performances this season.

The Nigerian international has attracted attention with his displays for Fulham, where he has also worn the captain’s armband under manager Alvaro Arbeloa.

United boast genuine talent at the heart of their defence where Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martínez, Ayden Heaven, and Harry Maguire hold sway.

However, after another slow start to the campaign, the Old Trafford landlords are believed to be assessing their defensive options ahead of a major rebuild in 2027.

Fulham ace Bassey is one of the players on United’s radar who could come under serious consideration.

Interestingly, Man United are not the only club monitoring Bassey as several others are also tracking the 26-year-old.

Why Man United want Calvin Bassey

United could lose several defenders next summer, with Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire all out of contract.

Martinez is reportedly ready to leave Old Trafford for a new challenge, while Barcelona have enquired about the Argentine centre-back.

Bassey would be the perfect replacement for Martinez in Manchester. The Super Eagles defender can play at centre-back and left-back, and his Premier League experience means he would not need time to adapt to English football.

Since joining Fulham from Ajax in 2023, Bassey has become a regular at Craven Cottage. He is fast, strong, versatile and has been a nightmare for many attackers in the Premier League and that list includes Erling Haaland and United’s own Bryan Mbeumo.

Fulham contract situation could open the door

Bassey’s contract runs until the summer of 2027, with Fulham holding an option to extend it by another year.

The London club wants to agree a new deal with the defender, who has become an important part of their plans. However, interest from other clubs could complicate negotiations if an agreement is not reached.

United will be watching the situation closely as they consider their options ahead of next summer. Fulham, meanwhile, will want to avoid losing a key player without securing his long-term future.

Newcastle, Everton and European clubs join the race

United face competition from several clubs interested in Bassey. TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle United and Everton have also been monitoring the defender.

Outside England, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are among the clubs following his progress.

Bassey is no stranger to playing football outside of England. The Nigerian centre-back made his name in Scotland with Rangers.

Bassey won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup and was a key figure for Rangers during their run to the 2022 UEFA Europa League final, which they lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt.

He also spent a season with Eredivisie giants Ajax before he joined Fulham as the most expensive Super Eagles defender signed by a Premier League club.
