Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been handed an opportunity to take the next step in his career, with Manchester United considering a move for the Fulham defender ahead of the January transfer window.
The Nigeria international has become one of Fulham’s most important players under Álvaro Arbeloa, earning the captain’s armband ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season.
However, Manchester United’s interest could present a difficult decision for the 26-year-old, especially after former club chief scout Mick Brown suggested he could be tempted if the Red Devils make an offer.

United are looking to strengthen their defence, with a left-sided centre-back high on their recruitment priorities. Bassey’s versatility, physical qualities and experience in English football make him an attractive option.
But what could convince the former Rangers and Ajax defender to leave a club where he has become a key figure?
Why Manchester United could appeal to Calvin Bassey
Brown believes Bassey’s qualities make him a suitable candidate for United’s defensive rebuild because of his ability to operate in more than one position.
“Calvin Bassey is a player I’ve admired for a long time, even back when he played for Rangers,” the former United chief scout told Football Insider.
“I thought he was excellent there, so physically dominant, but also comfortable on the ball, could play at left-back as well, and he’s improved since he joined Fulham.”

Bassey’s ability to play both centre-back and left-back will be very useful to Michael Carrick’s side as they assess their defensive options ahead of 2027.
“They want a left-sided defender because it’s an area where they are really weak, and Bassey is somebody who would be an upgrade on the players they’ve already got,” Brown added.
The Nigerian has also gained valuable Premier League experience since joining Fulham from Ajax in July 2023. He was named the club’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 season and has played over 100 top-flight games, while taking on responsibility as a captain at Craven Cottage.
That combination of experience, versatility and physical strength could give him an opportunity to establish himself at one of England’s biggest clubs.
Could Bassey leave his leadership role at Fulham?
The potential move is not without complications. Bassey is already an important figure at Fulham, where Arbeloa has publicly praised his performances and described him as one of the best centre-backs in the world.
His current contract expires in 2027, although Fulham have an option to extend it by another year. The club are also interested in agreeing fresh terms, meaning United would have to negotiate with a side determined to retain one of its key defenders.

Brown, however, believes the prospect of joining United could be more persuasive than what Fulham have to offer.
“Obviously Fulham aren’t going to want to let him go, but I think there is every chance he could be tempted to leave if Man United make an offer,” he said.
Newcastle United, Everton, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have also been linked with the Italy-born Nigerian defender, giving Fulham further reason to protect their asset.
United’s reported interest does not mean a transfer is imminent, and there is no confirmed bid or agreement. Nevertheless, Bassey could face an important career decision if the Old Trafford club formalise their interest.

For now, Fulham remain in control of his contract situation, but the prospect of joining Manchester United, particularly with the club seeking a left-sided defensive reinforcement, could be difficult for the Nigerian to ignore.
