Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been strongly linked with Manchester United, as the club appears keen to reinforce its backline in the coming months.
The 26-year-old defender has established himself as one of the best in the Premier League over the last two years. Two seasons ago, he won the club’s Player of the Season award.
His brilliance has seen him tipped to join several top clubs in the past year, though none made a move to sign him during the summer transfer window.
However, reports have emerged in recent days that Manchester United want to land the Nigerian.

Why Manchester United Want Calvin Bassey
The former Premier League champions have been one of the poorer teams in the Premier League this season. Their approach to games has been lacklustre, and their defence has been largely culpable.
Their problems, however, did not just start this season. There have been lingering issues across their backline in previous campaigns, and the same personnel remain in place.

The likes of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez have underperformed, while younger options like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven have been inconsistent.
Bassey, who has proven himself to be among the league’s standout performers, is considered a natural addition. He possesses extensive Premier League experience alongside proven pedigree at the top level.

Bassey also represents a sound financial option for Manchester United. He is in the final year of his contract at Fulham, with no talks regarding an extension underway. Furthermore, his estimated valuation of €26 million makes him an accessible target for the Red Devils.
Having excelled at Craven Cottage, Bassey appears ready for a step up and looks well suited to a top side.
United is Big, But Bassey Must Look Elsewhere
By all means, leaving Fulham for Manchester United represents a significant step up for any player. However, Old Trafford has proven to be a graveyard for top talents in recent years.

The club has recruited many elite players over that span, yet very few have lived up to expectations. Players such as Joshua Zirkzee, Benjamin Šeško, and Youri Tielemans have struggled for form this season. The pressure remains suffocating, leaving players just one poor match or press conference away from a full-blown controversy.
At this crucial stage of his career, moving from a stable environment requires careful consideration. Bassey must prioritize stability and consistency. Unfortunately, Manchester United cannot guarantee either. Opting for Old Trafford carries significant risk, and the situation could deteriorate quickly if results do not follow — especially once the fans turn against him.

The former Ajax defender has also been linked with Inter Milan, which represents a far more sensible destination. While expectations at San Siro remain intense, it offers a much more stable sporting environment than Old Trafford.
Moreover, his physical and commanding style of play makes him an ideal fit for Italian football.
With Bassey entering the final six months of his contract, he will be free to open pre-contract negotiations with overseas clubs starting in January. It remains to be seen where his next chapter lies.
