Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey is approaching a significant crossroads in his career, with Manchester United reportedly interested in signing him in the coming months.
The 26-year-old Nigeria international has attracted attention after establishing himself as one of Fulham’s most important players. His physical strength, recovery pace and ability to operate at both centre-back and left-back have made him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen their defence.
Manchester United are understood to be impressed by his performances and are assessing defensive reinforcements as they prepare for changes to their backline.

However, the Red Devils are not alone in monitoring the 26-year-old. Bassey’s contractual situation could make him an attractive proposition. His current Fulham deal expires in the summer of 2027, although the London club have an option to extend it by another year.
In this article, Afrik-Foot writes on five clubs that could sign Bassey in the summer.
1. Inter Milan
Inter Milan could offer Bassey an opportunity to test himself at one of Europe’s most established clubs. The Italian side’s defensive structure could be particularly suitable for the Nigerian, who is comfortable operating on the left side of a back three.
Bassey has the pace to cover wide spaces, the physical strength to compete against powerful forwards and the confidence to carry the ball out of defence.
A move to Serie A would also give the 26-year-old an opportunity to compete for domestic honours and potentially establish himself in another major European league.
There would, however, be competition for places. Inter have established defensive options like Carlos Augusto and Alessandro Bastoni, meaning Bassey would need to earn his position rather than expect an automatic starting role.
2. Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund could also be an interesting destination for Bassey. The Bundesliga side have traditionally placed emphasis on attacking football, pressing and quick transitions.
That approach can leave defenders exposed to opponents attacking the spaces behind them, making recovery pace and physical strength important attributes. But Bassey has both qualities.
The Nigerian is particularly effective when defending in open spaces, where his athleticism allows him to recover quickly and challenge attackers. His left-footed distribution could also help Dortmund progress the ball from the back and initiate attacks.
3. RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig could appeal to Bassey because of their emphasis on intensity, pressing and quick transitions. The German club have developed a reputation for signing athletic players who can operate in demanding tactical systems, and Bassey’s physical profile makes him a suitable addition.

He is also tactically flexibile because of his experience playing both centre-back and left-back.
At 26, Bassey is entering an important stage of his career. Joining a club with a reputation for developing players could help him improve further while remaining involved in European football.
However, moving to RB Leipzig is not the kind of big move that Bassey deserves at this point he deserves a more conistent side.
4. Newcastle United
Newcastle United could provide Bassey with the opportunity to remain in the Premier League while taking another step in his career.
The Magpies are among the English clubs reportedly monitoring the Fulham defender, and his experience in the competition could make him an attractive recruitment option.

His versatility could also be valuable over a long season, particularly when clubs have to manage injuries and competition across several positions.
Newcastle’s interest is understandable because they have been leaking in a lot of goals this season. Dan Burn, who has been playing left cener-back is definitely not on his level.
But the problem is that Newcastle do not look like they have a direction right now. They have continuously sold their best legs, and the coach Matthias Jaissle has struggled. Newcastle would need to convince him that their sporting project will give him the progression he needs.
5. Everton
Everton complete the list of Premier League alternatives for Bassey. The Toffees have also reportedly been monitoring the Nigerian defender as they consider their defensive options.

Bassey’s experience in England, physical attributes and versatility could make him a valuable addition to their backline.
Coach David Moyes likes gritty players who can grind out a win, and are also technically astutue. The Super Eagles star would also create competition for places in the Everton backline.
