Super Falcons: What are Nigeria’s chances of progressing to the 2024 Olympics quarter-finals?

Nigeria's Super Falcons are on the brink of elimination from the Paris 2024 Olympics after suffering a second consecutive 1-0 defeat, this time to Spain.

The late concession was a cruel blow to the Super Falcons, who had battled resolutely against the reigning world champions. This defeat compounded their opening loss to Brazil, leaving them on the edge.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged from the other group match, where Japan secured a 2-1 victory over Brazil. With this result, Nigeria remain in contention for a place in the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams, although the task ahead is formidable.

Can the Super Falcons still qualify?

The Super Falcons can still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, but the path is steep. They must defeat Japan convincingly in their final group game – by at least two goals – to have any chance of advancing.

Given the nature of their performances against Brazil and Spain, where they struggled to create significant scoring opportunities, achieving such a result appears a tall order.

Against Spain, the Super Falcons were resolute in defence but lacked cutting edge in attack. While they managed to frustrate their opponents for long periods, a moment of brilliance from Alexia Putellas proved decisive.

The team will need a significant improvement in their attacking play if they are to overcome Japan and prolong their stay in the tournament, and the likes of Asisat Oshoala and captain Rasheedat Ajibade must stand up to be counted.

With their backs against the wall, the Super Falcons must now summon all their resilience and determination to produce a performance that defies expectations.
