Stanley Nwabali returns to Chippa United: 2 key reasons behind Super Eagles GK’s surprise decision

Published on by

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a surprise return to South African club Chippa United just a few months after leaving the team, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 30-year-old has already returned to South Africa and is currently training with the Chilli Boys as they prepare for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season under new head coach Brandon Truter. The club confirmed on Sunday, via official channels, that the former Enyimba and Lobi Stars shot-stopper has returned to its fold.

Nwabali left the club earlier this year, having only just returned from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria finished third after beating Egypt on penalties in the bronze-medal match.

At the time, Chippa United were battling to avoid relegation, making his sudden exit even more surprising. Goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi stepped in brilliantly, keeping five clean sheets during the run-in and even captaining the side. His impressive performances also pushed him close to earning a national team call-up.

Now, after spending around five months without competitive football, Nwabali appears ready to return to the club where he built his reputation in South Africa. Two major reasons explain why the experienced goalkeeper has chosen to make this unexpected comeback.

Failed transfer plans left Nwabali with few options

Nwabali originally left Chippa United in February after agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent. His aim was to secure a move to a bigger club following his impressive performances for both Chippa and Nigeria.

However, the gamble did not pay off. The goalkeeper later admitted that he requested his release before receiving a firm offer from another club. Because he became a free agent outside the main transfer windows in Europe and Africa, finding a new team became much more difficult.

Several clubs were linked with the Nigerian international. Tanzanian giants Simba SC were strongly reported to be interested, but negotiations reportedly collapsed because of his salary demands, believed to be around $35,000 per month. There were also rumours linking him with Kaizer Chiefs and clubs in Saudi Arabia, but none of those moves became reality.

With no suitable offers arriving, Nwabali was left without a club despite being Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper to the 2023 and 2025 AFCON tournaments. Returning to Chippa United now gives him a familiar environment where he previously enjoyed four successful years and established himself as one of the Betway Premiership’s top goalkeepers.

Regular football is crucial to win back his Super Eagles place

Another major reason behind Nwabali’s return is his determination to regain his place in the Super Eagles.

His five months without competitive football had serious consequences for his international career. Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle left him out of his squads since the AFCON, with Maduka Okoye becoming the preferred choice between the posts.

Regular matches are essential to stay sharp for any goalkeeper and remaining without a club made it difficult for Nwabali to compete for the Super Eagles’ number-one shirt.

By rejoining Chippa United, he is expected to play regularly throughout the 2026/27 season, giving him the chance to rebuild his form and prove that he deserves another opportunity with the national team.

With contract discussions reportedly nearing completion, Nwabali’s return could benefit both player and club. Chippa United regain an experienced goalkeeper who knows the team well, while the Super Eagles star gets the opportunity to restart his career, regain confidence, and fight his way back into Nigeria’s squad ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifiers in September.
