AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca has revealed how Samuel Chukwueze is being groomed for specific tactical roles in the team’s evolving strategy.
Since his arrival from Villarreal in the summer of 2023 the Super Eagles forward has had a mixed spell with the Rossoneri, struggling to establish himself as a mainstay in the team.
Last season, under former manager Stefano Pioli, the 25-year-old made over 30 appearances, primarily coming off the bench as he played a supporting role to American Christian Pulisic.
While the Nigeria winger has started three of Milan’s last five Serie A fixtures, he has come off the bench in the most recent two league matches.
However, he was given a starting opportunity in the UEFA Champions League clash against Slovan Bratislava and impressed, before delivering a standout performance in a 6-1 Cup victory over Sassuolo, reminding the Milan faithful of his quality by scoring twice.
Fonseca's recent comments hint at Chukwueze’s growing importance, especially in games demanding defensive discipline and counter-attacking precision.
Chukwueze's adaptability offers tactical edge for Milan
Fonseca shed light on Chukwueze's evolving role during his pre-match press conference ahead of Friday’s Serie A clash with Atalanta.
“I remember talking about Chukwu two games ago. He's adapting well. When we need this role on the right, he's progressing. There's no problem with him… he can play this role in some games,” the Portuguese trainer said.
He has featured in 17 matches for the Rossoneri, starting in eight of them. During this time, he has contributed three goals and one assist, maintaining an average of 45 minutes per game.
Chukwueze, whose contract with Milan runs until the summer of 2028, has also been linked with clubs such as Spanish side Atletico Madrid, Premier League outfits West Ham, Aston Villa, and Everton, as well as Turkish giants Besiktas.
