Denmark U-21 international of Nigerian descent Patrick Dorgu has opened up on the possibility of switching nationality to play for the Super Eagles.
The left-back is currently enjoying a great season in the Seria A, where he has made 23 appearances for Lecce and scored one goal.
Dorgu’s international career is, however, yet to take off, with the defender only lining up for Denmark at youth level. The 19-year-old has so far featured for the European country’s U18, U19, U20 and U21 teams but has yet to be capped at senior level.
This makes him eligible to play for the Super Eagles due to his Nigerian roots and Dorgu believes anything is possible despite favouring playing for the country of his birth.
Dorgu embraces both Danish and Nigeria roots
Discussing his international future, the Lecce left-back acknowledged his ties to both Nigeria and Denmark but said he hasn’t given thought to a nationality switch yet.
He was also quick to add that he wants to just focus on doing well at club level and then he would see what the future holds.
“I haven't thought about that. Everyone dreams of being able to represent their country. I was born in Denmark and have African roots, and right now I haven't thought about having to make a choice. I just play football and let it come with time,” Dorgu told Bold.

The defender also expressed his desire to play for Denmark at the 2024 European Championships later this year despite still waiting for his first senior cap.
“Of course, I hope that I can play my way into the European Championships squad. That would be huge. It is in my hands and of course also in Kasper Hjulmand's [Denmark head coach], so I just try to do as well as possible at club level, and after all it is he who chooses the squad,” he added.
Dorgu joined Lecce in the summer of 2022 and has since established himself as a starter for the Italian side. The left-back retains the option of representing Nigeria or Denmark at international level despite being born in the latter country.
