Yan Diomande set to rewrite history: Where Victor Osimhen ranks among Africa’s biggest transfers

Victor Osimhen may soon surrender one of African football’s most prestigious records, but the Super Eagles striker’s place in transfer history remains secure, Afrik Foot reports.

According to Transfermarkt, Real Madrid are pushing to sign Ivorian sensation Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal expected to exceed €100 million, a fee that would make the 19-year-old the most expensive African footballer ever.

However, Los Blancos face stiff competition from Liverpool and Manchester City. RB Leipzig have not yet struck any agreement with any club whatsoever to sell the winger.

Liverpool submitted a €90m offer for the 19-year-old with an additional €10m in add-ons in June, but that fell significantly short of Leipzig’s asking price. Die Rottenbullen are demanding €130m for Diomande, and they are under no pressure to sell, with the youngster contracted until 2030.

Without a doubt, if the transfer goes through, Diomande would eclipse Osimhen’s €79 million move from Lille to Napoli in 2020, pushing the Nigerian further down the list of Africa’s costliest transfers.

Why Osimhen’s legacy remains unique

Transfer fees reflect timing as much as talent. When Napoli agreed to spend €78.9 million on Osimhen in 2020, very few African forwards were commanding fees close to Europe’s established superstars.

The Nigerian justified that investment almost immediately. He became Napoli’s talisman, fired the club to a historic Serie A title, won the Capocannoniere award, finished eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings and established himself among the world’s elite strikers.

Those achievements significantly changed how European clubs valued African centre-forwards.
