Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his admiration for Alex Iwobi, stating the Fulham star will be regarded as a Nigerian football legend when he eventually retires.

Despite facing criticism throughout his international career, Iwobi has remained a pivotal figure for Nigeria since making his debut in 2015 under then-coach Sunday Oliseh.

At just 27 years old, Iwobi has amassed 83 caps for Nigeria, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists. His first goal came during a crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

Troost-Ekong highlighted Iwobi’s professionalism and work ethic, noting his commitment to the team even amid challenges.

“He has nothing to prove, always comes here on time, doesn’t open his mouth, works hard, has been criticized heavily by people also sitting in this room,” Troost-Ekong said during a press conference ahead of Nigeria’s clash with Rwanda. “He is someone that will go down as a real great when he finishes playing.”

Ekong demands respect for Iwobi

Iwobi’s career has not been without its challenges. At the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he faced a barrage of abuse online, forcing him to disable his social media accounts.

Yet, the 2024 CAF Player of the Year nominee believes Iwobi’s resilience and achievements will eventually earn him the respect he deserves.

“I think the biggest motivation we see is in great players like Alex Iwobi,” Troost-Ekong added. “He has been here for a long time, 80-something caps… someone who has played in the Premier League throughout his career. Sometimes you have to appreciate the players we have here.”

The Super Eagles play Rwanda on Monday, and they will be looking to claim a win even though they have qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
