Ethan Nwaneri to Super Eagles: Why Arsenal star could choose Nigeria over England

Published on by

Ethan Nwaneri could be a valuable addition to Nigeria’s Super Eagles if he decides to represent his country of heritage rather than England at senior international level.

Born in England to a Nigerian father and an English-French mother, Nwaneri is eligible to play international football for the three nations. However, with the youngster raised and nurtured through the English system, the 1966 World Cup winners always had the edge whenever the question of his allegiance came up.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder came through England’s youth teams and won the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

However, his Nigerian roots have never been too far away from the equation and there was always the possibility that he could switch allegiance and play for the Super Eagles.

Every single day that passes without Ethan Nwaneri making his senior competitive debut for England, hands Nigeria the hope of one day seeing the Islington-born talent in the Super Eagles’ traditional green and white.

Interestingly, that day could be closer than expected as fresh reports suggest that Nwaneri could be considering taking the first step towards representing the three-time African champions.

Choosing Nigeria would give him a robust route to senior international football, but leaving England’s setup would not be an easy decision.

Why Nigeria could appeal to Ethan Nwaneri

One attraction for Ethan Nwaneri could be the chance to establish himself in Nigeria’s senior team early in his career, similar to the path taken by Alex Iwobi.

Iwobi was only 19 years old when he made his Super Eagles’ debut after already featuring for England at different youth levels. Over the last 11 years, the former Arsenal lad has played with Nigeria at the World Cup, won several medals at the Africa Cup of Nations and made over 100 appearances for the Super Eagles.

Nwaneri could be encouraged to follow the Iwobi footsteps. England have several talented attacking midfielders competing for places, making a call-up under Thomas Tuchel difficult to secure.

Nigeria could offer Ethan Nwaneri another route to regular international football, although

While he would still have to earn his Super Eagles place, Ethan Nwaneri’s talent will find room to play regularly and shine alongside the likes of Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and George Ilenikhena.

Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles would benefit from his creativity, close control and ability to find space in the final third. Nigeria have several dangerous forwards, but Nwaneri’s ability to link midfield with attack and create chances in tight spaces could elevate the team to new heights.

And with the 2027 AFCON just around the corner, what better platform to make his tournament debut for the Super Eagles than the continent’s most celebrated football festival.

At 19, he could also become an important player for Nigeria over the next decade if he continues to develop and prove himself at senior level.

Why staying with England could make sense

Until the allegiance switch decision is made public, though, it should be treated with care.

Ethan Nwaneri has spent years in England’s youth system, progressing from the under-16s to the under-21s and winning a European title. Staying with England would allow him to build on that experience while pursuing a place in the senior squad.

His club career, in particular, is a factor that will make a Super Eagles decision a tough one to make. After gaining experience with Arsenal, Marseille and Borussia Dortmund, Nwaneri needs regular football and continued progress at club level before taking on more international commitments.

Switching to Nigeria would also bring long-distance travel for international matches and the pressure of representing a country with high expectations. His young shoulders may not be ready to bear such burdens just yet.

Ultimately, Nwaneri must decide which country offers the best route for his international career.

With Nigeria, he may never win the World Cup and may miss a few editions but after a couple of AFCON medals, he could become a Super Eagles legend. England, however, will offer him a familiar setup, an institutionalised structure and a few chances to be part of a team challenging for the World Cup and European Championship.

Many Nigeria-eligible footballers have taken that route and lived to regret it. It is up to Nwaneri to decide which chapter of history he wants his name to appear for eternity.
