First Super Eagles call-up for Rangers ace Fernandez: How does he fit Chelle’s plans?

Published on by

Glasgow Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has been informed that he will be part of Nigeria’s squad for this month’s international games, Afrik-Foot reports.

Fernandez has received the invitation to be part of the Super Eagles set-up for the games against Jordan and Iran this March, according to IbroxNews.

This marks a big moment in the career of Fernandez, who was practically an unknown quality when Nigeria headed to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.

After an excellent six months in Scotland for Fernandez, the Super Eagles have moved quickly to secure his commitment, with head coach Eric Chelle keen to add fresh quality to his defence.

The 24-year-old centre-back has earned this opportunity after a brilliant debut season with Rangers. Since arriving from Peterborough United, he has become a key player at Ibrox, showing both defensive strength and attacking threat.

Fernandez has made 24 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring six goals, an impressive return for a defender. He has also helped his team keep 10 clean sheets, a solid show of his importance at the back. His performances were especially strong in January, when he was named the club’s Player of the Month after a run of games where Rangers conceded just once.

What makes Chelsea-linked Fernandez stand out is his physical presence and calmness on the ball. He wins most of his aerial duels and is dangerous during set-pieces, often scoring with his head.

At the same time, he is comfortable passing from the back, something that fits perfectly with Chelle’s style of play. His ability to step up from English lower-league football to European matches, including games in the UEFA Europa League, shows how quickly he has improved.

How Fernandez fits into Nigeria’s defence

Nigeria already have experienced defenders like Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, two elite centre-backs who guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the AFCON.

However, Fernandez offers something slightly different. His height and strength could make him one of the most dominant defenders in the squad, especially when dealing with crosses and set-pieces. Nigeria only conceded four goals at the AFCON, but half of those were from set-pieces.

Fernandez could also form a strong partnership with Bassey. While Bassey is left-footed and comfortable carrying the ball forward, Fernandez is right-footed and more focused on winning aerial battles and staying solid defensively. This balance could give the Super Eagles a more complete centre-back pairing, especially with Ajayi on the wrong side of 30.

Chelle is also looking to refresh his defence, with some older players nearing the later stages of their careers. Fernandez’s arrival provides a long-term option who can grow into a key role for the national team. His goal-scoring ability is another bonus, as Nigeria have sometimes struggled to convert chances from set-pieces.

Nigeria are set to play a four-team friendly tournament in Turkey later this month, facing teams like Jordan, Iran, and Costa Rica. This tournament could be the perfect stage for Fernandez to make his debut and show what he can offer.

If he performs well, he may quickly become a regular starter. Still, his call-up is a clear reward for hard work, consistency, and a season that has turned him into one of the most exciting defensive prospects available to Nigeria.
