Coventry City’s long wait for a return to the Premier League is all but over and for Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka, it ushers in a major turning point in his career, Afrik-Foot reports.
The 26-year-old joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brentford in February, but that short-term move is now set to become permanent. Coventry’s promotion push included a clause that required the club to sign Onyeka outright if they secured a place in the top flight, and that condition has now effectively been met.
It completes a quick but important transition for Onyeka, who has brought energy, discipline and balance to Coventry’s midfield during the most decisive period of their season. Nicknamed ‘The Tank’ for his tireless style, he has quickly become a trusted figure under manager Frank Lampard.

Coventry’s rise has been built on consistency and attacking strength. With four matches left, they sit top of the Championship table on 85 points, firmly in control of their own destiny. Promotion is within reach, but the club’s ambition has now shifted towards winning the title itself.
They need a maximum of seven points from their remaining fixtures to guarantee first place, regardless of results elsewhere. With games against Blackburn, Portsmouth, Wrexham and Watford still to come, the task is clearly to finish the job strongly and lift the trophy.

Title push could seal Onyeka’s fourth career honour
The stakes could even be even higher for Onyeka. Winning the Championship title would represent the fourth major trophy of his senior career, and his first since leaving Denmark in 2021.
Before moving to England, Onyeka enjoyed a highly successful spell at FC Midtjylland, where he won two Danish Superliga titles and the Danish Cup. He was also named the club’s Player of the Year during their 2019–20 title-winning campaign.
Since then, he has gained valuable experience in the Premier League and on loan in Germany, while also becoming a regular for Nigeria’s Super Eagles. He was part of the squad that finished runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and claimed a bronze medal at AFCON 2025.

Now, he stands on the brink of another milestone. While promotion alone would be a major achievement, lifting the Championship trophy would give Onyeka his first piece of silverware in English football, and add another chapter to an already impressive career.
Coventry’s attacking form, which has seen them become one of the league’s highest-scoring sides, will be key in the final weeks. But equally important will be the control and stability provided by Onyeka in midfield.
If Coventry can maintain their level and finish the season strongly, Onyeka will not only secure a permanent home at the club, he could also celebrate a fourth career title, and his most significant achievement yet in English football.
