Fulham fumble Nwaiwu transfer? 3 big wins waiting for Super Eagles defender

Fulham’s move for Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has run into serious trouble after negotiations with Trabzonspor reached a standstill, Afrik-Foot reports.

Although the Premier League club has already agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old Nigerian centre-back on a contract running until 2030, the two clubs remain far apart on the transfer fee. Fulham, who could be rivalled by Tottenham for the former Enyimba man, have already seen two offers rejected. Their latest proposal, reportedly worth €28 million, including €25 million guaranteed and another €3 million in bonuses, failed to convince Trabzonspor’s board.

The Turkish club believes Crystal Palace-linked Nwaiwu is now one of the most valuable young defenders in Europe and has refused to accept anything below €30 million. Some reports inside the club even suggest Trabzonspor would only consider bids close to €40 million.

The situation leaves the transfer in limbo unless Fulham return with a significantly improved third offer before the summer transfer window closes.

Fulham agreement not enough as Trabzonspor stand firm

Fulham have done their part with the player. Nwaiwu has reportedly accepted the idea of joining Alvaro Arbeloa’s side after his representatives informed Trabzonspor that the defender wants to play in the Premier League. He believes regular football in England will strengthen his position in Nigeria’s senior national team ahead of future AFCON and FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns.

However, personal terms alone cannot complete the transfer. Trabzonspor are under no financial pressure to sell after signing Nwaiwu from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC for just €5.5 million in January. In only a few months, the Nigerian established himself as one of the Süper Lig’s standout defenders and helped the club win the Turkish Cup.

Selling him now for more than €30 million would represent one of the biggest profits in Trabzonspor’s recent history, which explains why the club refuses to lower its asking price.

Meanwhile, Fulham know time is running out. Crystal Palace and West Ham United remain interested from the Premier League, while Serie A champions Napoli continue to monitor developments in case negotiations collapse completely.

According to reports, Trabzonspor have prepared several packages to appease Nwaiwu in case he fails to secure his dream Premier League move.

First contingency plan: Trabzonspor ready to double Nwaiwu’s salary

If Fulham fail to meet their valuation, Trabzonspor are prepared to reward Nwaiwu with a massive new contract. The Nigerian currently earns around €880,000 per year after signing a four-and-a-half-year deal following his arrival from Wolfsberger AC.

Club officials are now preparing an improved package worth more than €1.8 million annually, almost doubling his current salary. The deal would also include generous performance bonuses to make staying in Turkey financially attractive.

Although the proposed salary would still be below Fulham’s reported €2.5 million yearly offer, Trabzonspor hope the increase will show how highly they value one of their fastest-rising stars.

Second plan: Longer contract and stronger protection

Trabzonspor are also ready to secure Nwaiwu’s long-term future by extending his contract beyond its current 2030 expiry date. The proposed agreement would include a significantly higher release clause, allowing the Turkish club to maintain control over any future transfer discussions.

This strategy would protect Nwaiwu’s growing market value while giving the club greater bargaining power if Europe’s biggest teams return with offers in future transfer windows. Instead of selling under pressure now, Trabzonspor believe they could command an even bigger fee after another successful season.

Third plan: Build the team around Nwaiwu in Europe

The final part of Trabzonspor’s strategy is sporting rather than financial. Club officials believe another season in Turkey, combined with European football, could increase Nwaiwu’s reputation across the continent.

The defender would remain a key figure as Trabzonspor aim to challenge for the Süper Lig title while competing in Europe. The club also wants to keep its Nigerian core together after convincing star striker Paul Onuachu to stay despite several lucrative offers from Turkey and abroad.

Trabzonspor believe strong performances in European competition could push Nwaiwu’s market value beyond the current €30-35 million range and eventually attract even bigger clubs.

At the moment, Fulham still have an opportunity to revive the deal. But unless they return with an improved offer that satisfies Trabzonspor’s demands, Nwaiwu looks set to continue his development in Turkey.
