Fulham vs Chelsea: Iwobi, Bassey up for Blues test — Preview, team news, tips & H2H

Published on by

Chelsea cross the Fulham Road on Monday night for the opening West London derby of the 2026-27 Premier League season, with both clubs beginning fresh chapters under new management, Afrik-Foot reports.

Xabi Alonso makes his competitive debut as Chelsea head coach at Craven Cottage, while Alvaro Arbeloa takes charge of Fulham for the first time in a league fixture, reuniting two former Real Madrid teammates.

For Nigerian fans, this fixture carries particular significance. Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey are set to start for Fulham.

Iwobi will be key to whether Arbeloa’s side can trouble a team with considerably more resources, while Bassey faces a test in what is likely to be a porous Fulham back line.

Fulham vs Chelsea Preview: New Eras Collide in West London

Last season’s final table told a story of genuine mediocrity from both clubs. Chelsea finished 10th and Fulham 11th, level on 52 points, separated only by an inferior goal difference.

Chelsea’s season was defined by dysfunction. Four managerial changes across the campaign, beginning with Enzo Maresca’s dismissal in January, produced a club with neither direction nor identity.

Xabi Alonso, who masterminded Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga-winning season before a stint at Real Madrid, arrives at Stamford Bridge tasked with bringing structure to a squad that repeatedly underperformed its talent.

The response in the transfer market has been significant. Morgan Rogers made the move from Aston Villa for a British record £117 million, increasing the depth and quality of a squad that already had the likes of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.

Fulham’s summer has moved in the opposite direction. Harry Wilson, their top scorer with 10 league goals in 2025-26, has left, as have Raul Jimenez and Sasa Lukic.

Those departures remove experience from key areas of the pitch that Arbeloa now needs to replace.

Real Madrid connections Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios represent the incoming pieces. The latter two worked under Arbeloa at youth level in Madrid, suggesting familiarity, but their readiness for Premier League football on the opening weekend is unproven.

Arbeloa begins his Premier League career against one of the most structured, well-resourced opponents he could face, which represents a difficult starting assignment for a first-time top-flight manager.

Fulham vs Chelsea: Head-to-Head

The Premier League head-to-head record between these clubs has long favoured Chelsea, but the recent pattern of results has been notably tighter, with Fulham claiming victory in two of the last five encounters.

Chelsea kicked off 2025-26 with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on August 30, 2025, when Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez delivered a victory. The most recent encounter, played at Craven Cottage in January 2026, ended 2-1 to Fulham after Chelsea had Marc Cucurella dismissed.

None of the last five meetings between the sides has finished level. This fixture tends to produce a decisive outcome rather than a draw, and that pattern is likely to continue when the defensive shape and managerial inexperience on both sides is factored in.

Over the past 22 meetings, Chelsea have defeated Fulham 13 times, drawing six times, while the Cottagers have claimed three victories.

Team News

Fulham

Fulham’s most pressing problem is the absence of Joachim Andersen, who carries a suspension over from the 2025-26 campaign and will not be available for the opener.

The Danish centre-back was fundamental to Fulham’s defensive organisation last season and his absence leaves Arbeloa with a less experienced pairing to call upon.

Jorge Cuenca is expected to step into the starting XI alongside Bassey, who will assume greater defensive responsibility without Andersen’s reading of the game to rely upon.

Tom Cairney is the only confirmed injury absentee after knee surgery performed earlier this month. The captain is not expected to return until October.

Chelsea

Chelsea have a longer list of absentees to contend with. Wesley Fofana is suspended after receiving a red card against Sunderland on the final day of last season and will miss this game entirely.

Jordan Henderson is still recovering from the wrist injury he sustained at the 2026 World Cup and is not yet available. Emanuel Emegha is a doubt with a hamstring complaint.

Caleb Wiley (groin), Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr were doubts for the game, but have been passed fit for the game.

Danny Welbeck, who joined from Brighton this summer, had been managing a minor physical complaint through the week but Alonso confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the forward would be available for selection.

The Managers: Xabi Alonso vs Alvaro Arbeloa

Xabi Alonso, 44, enters this match as arguably the most celebrated new manager in the Premier League this summer.

His Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen, secured without a single league defeat, established his credentials as a coach capable of imposing ideas with conviction.

Alonso’s tactical model centres on vertical possession play, with defenders who can build from the back and wide players who tuck inside to create overloads in central areas.

The transition from Bundesliga to Premier League physical intensity will be a factor, but the pre-season results, including a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad in the final warm-up, suggest his ideas are being absorbed quickly.

Alvaro Arbeloa, 43, arrives at Fulham with considerably less managerial experience. The Spaniard worked with Real Madrid’s youth academy for several years before being appointed interim head coach of the first team following the departure of the previous permanent manager.

His experience in managing senior football teams is minimal, and the step up to the Premier League as a first-time full-time top-flight manager is a steep challenge from day one.

Tactical Preview: How Fulham vs Chelsea Could Unfold

Chelsea are expected to operate in the 3-4-2-1 that Alonso used throughout pre-season, with Fofana’s suspension effectively forcing James into the back three alongside Lacroix and Colwill.

Pedro Neto should provide width and direct pace from the right wingback position, while Palestra offers a different kind of threat from the left.

Palmer and Rogers as the dual advanced midfielders behind Joao Pedro create a problem that Fulham’s reconfigured defence has not been tested against.

Andersen’s absence means Cuenca and Bassey will need to communicate quickly and manage the movement of two players who habitually drift between the lines in the half-spaces.

Fulham’s likely 4-2-3-1 structure will ask Iwobi and Berge to provide defensive compactness as well as creative drive.

Iwobi in particular will need to balance his tendency to drive forward, which produced 40 key passes last season, against the need to track Chelsea’s advancing wing-backs and prevent the overloads that Alonso’s system is designed to create.

The battle between Antonee Robinson and Neto on Fulham’s left side could prove decisive. Robinson’s attacking quality and willingness to push forward are assets for Arbeloa, but Neto’s directness and delivery make him a threat that the American full-back cannot ignore.

Fulham’s best route to an equaliser or lead may come through transition. Bobb carries pace on the right side, and with Chelsea’s back three occupied by James, Lacroix and Colwill, the spaces in behind when Chelsea lose possession could be the areas that Garcia and Bobb target.

Fulham vs Chelsea: Prediction and Betting Tips

Our Fulham vs Chelsea Betting Tips
Tip 1: Both teams to score (Yes)
Three of the last five H2H meetings produced goals at both ends. Andersen’s absence leaves Fulham’s defence less organised than at any point in recent seasons, and Joao Pedro’s record of seven away goals in last season’s Premier League, combined with Iwobi’s creative threat, makes a blanket shut-out unlikely. Chelsea scored in the comeback at Craven Cottage in April 2025, and Fulham have found the net in both home games against the Blues over the past 16 months.
Tip 2: Chelsea to win
The gap in squad quality is substantial. Chelsea have reinforced with over £200 million in arrivals, are managed by a coach with an unbeaten Bundesliga title on his record, and face a Fulham side missing its first-choice centre-back and managed by someone making his senior full-time top-flight debut. Alonso’s teams press high and transition quickly, which is exactly the type of approach that an inexperienced Fulham backline on opening day will struggle against.
Value bet: Joao Pedro to score anytime
The Brazilian forward scored 15 Premier League goals in his debut Chelsea season at a rate of 0.51 per 90 minutes, making him one of the most consistent finishers in the division. With Andersen absent, Fulham’s central defence will be tested by Palmer and Rogers running in behind and between the lines, creating exactly the type of delivery situations that Pedro thrives on. He already has a goal to his name against Fulham in the H2H record.

Fulham vs Chelsea Final score prediction

Our Predicted Score
Fulham
Arbeloa
1-2 Chelsea
Alonso
Reasoning: Chelsea win on squad quality, though Fulham score at home as Andersen’s absence is punished at the other end.
