Osho: Super Eagles newbie sees red in Auxerre loss

Super Eagles defender, Gabriel Osho endured a difficult afternoon as his red card contributed to Auxerre’s 2-0 loss to Angers at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Sunday. The defeat marked their seventh consecutive game without a win across all competitions.

Auxerre, under mounting pressure after failing to secure a victory in their last six matches, found themselves trailing early when Sinaly Diomande scored an own goal in the 18th minute.

Just moments later, the situation worsened for the visitors when Osho was shown a straight red card for a foul, reducing his side to 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Auxerre continued to press for an equalizer. However, Angers doubled their lead shortly after halftime. Esteban Lepaul’s strike sealed the win for the hosts in the 50th minute, making it 2-0.

The newly capped Nigerian defender’s statistics reflected his brief involvement, with 22 minutes played before his sending off. He made 14 passes, completing 93% of them, and won two aerial duels.

Osho also contributed defensively with one clearance and a single successful ground duel, but his red card left his side in an uphill battle.

It was his second red card in senior football, the first occurring during his time at Luton Town in the 2022-2023 Sky Bet Championship season.

With the defeat, Auxerre remain only five points clear of the relegation zone. Their next challenge will be a home clash against Saint-Étienne, who also settled for a 1-1 draw against Nantes.
