Genclerbirligi accused of forcing Super Eagles forward out amid growing tensions

Turkish side Genclerbirligi have found themselves at the centre of controversy involving Super Eagles forward Henry Onyekuru, who has been left out of the squad, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigerian broadcast journalist, Buch Laba, reveals that Onyekuru’s omission has little to do with form or fitness.

Instead, it points to internal politics within the club, which looks like a deliberate attempt to force him out, despite the Nigerian attacker being fully fit and available for selection whenever called upon.

Onyekuru joined Genclerbirligi on a free transfer last summer, but the move has failed to deliver the expected results for both parties. The situation reached a new low ahead of Saturday’s clash against his former club Galatasaray, with the 28-year-old left out of the squad entirely.

Tensions escalated further when the player’s agent was also denied access to the club’s training ground on Thursday, in what remains an unclear and controversial development.

So far this season, Onyekuru has made 19 appearances in all competitions, including 17 in the Turkish Super Lig, but is yet to register a goal or assist, marking a difficult campaign by his standards.

Genclerbirligi will now prepare to host Galatasaray, with fellow Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen expected to return for the visitors. The hosts, meanwhile, will be desperate for points as they continue their fight for survival.

What next for Onyekuru after Genclerbirligi exile?

Onyekuru arrived at the Turkish club last summer, hoping to rediscover his best form after his spell in Saudi Arabia, but things have not gone according to plan, and his recent omission only fuels uncertainty around his future.

While the forward has not publicly pushed for a move, the current situation could force a rethink ahead of the summer transfer window.
