Goztepe vs Galatasaray preview, predictions, h2h, & tips: Cimbom get another big test without Osimhen

Published on by

Goztepe welcome league leaders Galatasaray to the Gursel Aksel Stadyumu on Wednesday for a rescheduled Round 27 fixture in the Turkish Super Lig.

The hosts sit fifth on 46 points after ending a six-match winless run with a 2-0 victory at Genclerbirligi last Saturday, while Galatasaray arrive in Izmir licking their wounds following a 2-1 defeat at Trabzonspor that trimmed their lead at the summit to a single point.

Okan Buruk’s side have been chasing a record-equalling fourth consecutive Super Lig title all season, and with Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce breathing down their necks, this is no time for slip-ups.

Goztepe, for their part, are targeting European qualification for the first time in years, and Stanimir Stoilov’s well-drilled outfit will fancy their chances of causing an upset against a Galatasaray team missing several key names through injury and suspension.

Nigerian Connection: Dennis and Osimhen

This fixture pits two of the Super Lig’s most prominent Nigerian talents against each other, though only one will be on the pitch on Wednesday.

Anthony Dennis, the 21-year-old defensive midfielder who came through the HB Academy in Abuja, has blossomed into one of the breakout stars of the Turkish top flight this season.

Born in Kaduna, Dennis joined Goztepe’s youth setup in January 2023 and helped the club earn promotion from the TFF First League before establishing himself as a regular starter in the Super Lig.

He has three goals and a FotMob rating of 7.17 across 27 league appearances this campaign, and his consistent performances earned him a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles provisional squad in March.

Victor Osimhen, meanwhile, will be watching from the stands after fracturing his right forearm during Galatasaray’s Champions League defeat at Liverpool on March 18.

The 27-year-old underwent surgery and is targeting a return for the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce on April 26, but his absence is a massive blow for a Galatasaray side that has relied heavily on his 19 goals and seven assists across all competitions this term.

Match Preview: Goztepe vs Galatasaray

Form Guide

Goztepe’s season has been one of two distinct halves. Stoilov’s side were unbeaten through their opening eight league matches, establishing themselves as one of the surprise packages of the campaign.

A dip in form around the turn of the year saw them slip down the table, and a brutal run of four draws and two defeats across six games before the international break raised real questions about whether the wheels were coming off.

Saturday’s 2-0 win at Genclerbirligi, secured through goals from Novatus Miroshi and a Malcom Bokele penalty, was exactly the shot in the arm they needed.

Stoilov admitted afterwards that his side were fortunate at times, but the defensive organisation was excellent as Goztepe barely allowed their opponents a sniff.

Galatasaray, by contrast, arrive at a potentially awkward moment in their season.

The Trabzonspor defeat was their third loss in Super Lig play this term and came off the back of a bruising Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool, where they were thumped 4-0 at Anfield having won the first leg 1-0.

That night in Liverpool cost Buruk two key players in Osimhen and Noa Lang, who required double surgery on his thumb after a sickening collision with the advertising hoardings.

The title race is now wide open, with Trabzonspor on 63 points from 28 games and Fenerbahce lurking on around 60 with games in hand.

A fourth straight league crown is still firmly within Galatasaray’s grasp, but they cannot afford another slip here.

Home and Away Records

Goztepe’s home form has been the bedrock of their season. They have lost just once at the Gursel Aksel in the league all campaign, though a string of draws in recent home games against Eyupspor (0-0), Kayserispor (0-0) and Alanyaspor (2-2) underlines a growing inability to convert dominance into victories on their own patch.

Galatasaray’s away record stands at nine wins, one draw and two defeats from 12 league games on the road, a return of 28 points that comfortably leads the division’s away table.

However, they have looked more vulnerable in recent travels, and the loss at Trabzonspor’s Papara Park showed they can be got at when opponents press them early and match their intensity.

The Bigger Picture

For Goztepe, a European place is the target. Fifth place puts them in the mix for Conference League qualification, and a win here would strengthen that position significantly while dealing a blow to the champions’ title defence.

Galatasaray simply need the three points to stay ahead of the chasing pack. With their Champions League campaign over, Buruk’s squad can now focus entirely on domestic matters, but the injury list makes that task considerably harder.

Head-to-Head Record: Goztepe vs Galatasaray

The historical record makes grim reading for Goztepe supporters. Galatasaray have won eight consecutive meetings between the two clubs, a run stretching back to the 2020-21 season.

In 18 total meetings, Galatasaray have won 16 times, with Goztepe managing just two victories and no draws.

The reverse fixture earlier this season, played at RAMS Park in October, finished 3-1 to the hosts.

Efkan Bekiroglu actually gave Goztepe a shock sixth-minute lead before Osimhen equalised 13 minutes later.

Things unravelled for the visitors when Malcom Bokele was sent off just before half-time, and Galatasaray capitalised through goals from Gabriel Sara and Mauro Icardi in the space of three second-half minutes.

The most common scoreline when Goztepe host Galatasaray is 0-1, which has occurred three times in their recent history.

Seven of the last eight meetings between these sides have produced over 2.5 goals, and both teams have scored in seven of those eight encounters.

Team News: Goztepe vs Galatasaray

Goztepe

Stoilov has two confirmed absentees for Wednesday’s clash. Malcom Bokele is suspended after accumulating too many bookings this season, which means the versatile defender will miss out despite scoring from the penalty spot in the Genclerbirligi win.

Ismail Koybasi remains sidelined with an injury and is not expected to feature.

Goztepe’s top scorer JP Galvao (Juan) will lead the line, with Brazilian forward Janderson expected to partner him in the front two.

Expect Stoilov to stick with a back three of Heliton, Bayir and Godoi, with Cherni and Kurtulan providing width from the wing-back positions.

Predicted Goztepe XI (3-4-1-2): Lis; Heliton, Bayir, Godoi; Kurtulan, Dennis, Simiao Gomes, Cherni; Miroshi; Janderson, Juan

Galatasaray

Buruk faces a selection headache with several first-choice players ruled out.

Victor Osimhen is recovering from his forearm surgery and will not feature until late April at the earliest.

Noa Lang is also a long-term absentee after his thumb operation following the Liverpool match.

But in what is good news, Leroy Sane is back after serving a one-game suspension. However, Gabriel Sara is nursing an injury and was unavailable for the Trabzonspor defeat.

Most crucially for this game, centre-back Abdulkerim Bardakci picked up a red card after the final whistle at Trabzonspor for a confrontation with opposition players and will serve a one-match ban.

That leaves Buruk needing to reshuffle his defence, with Wilfried Singo likely to shift inside to centre-back alongside Davinson Sanchez, allowing Roland Sallai to slot in at right-back.

Mauro Icardi will lead the line in Osimhen’s absence, while Baris Alper Yilmaz and Yunus Akgun should start in wide positions.

Ilkay Gundogan may get the nod in midfield alongside Lucas Torreira and Mario Lemina, though Roland Sallai is also an option.

Predicted Galatasaray XI (4-2-3-1): Ugurcan Cakir; Sallai, Singo, Sanchez, Jakobs; Torreira, Lemina; Baris Alper Yilmaz, Gundogan, Leroy Sane; Icardi

The Managers

Stanimir Stoilov (Goztepe)

The 58-year-old Bulgarian has been a revelation since taking charge of Goztepe.

Stoilov guided the club to automatic promotion from the second tier in 2023-24 and has consolidated their position in the Super Lig with an approach built on tactical discipline and defensive solidity.

His CV includes Champions League group stage campaigns with both Levski Sofia and FC Astana, plus stints in charge of the Bulgaria and Kazakhstan national teams.

That European pedigree shows in the way Goztepe set up: compact, organised, and dangerous on the counter.

A European place would represent a remarkable achievement in just their second season back in the top flight under his guidance.

Okan Buruk (Galatasaray)

Buruk is chasing history. A fourth consecutive Super Lig title would cement his status as one of the most successful coaches in the club’s storied history, and the fact that he has kept Galatasaray competitive on multiple fronts throughout the campaign speaks to his management of a deep and talented squad.

However, the last few weeks have tested him like no other period during his tenure.

The Champions League elimination, the injuries to Osimhen and Lang, the suspension of Bardakci and Sane, and the narrow defeat at Trabzonspor have all piled pressure on the 52-year-old.

How he navigates this tricky run of fixtures without several key personnel will define the season.

Tactical Preview

Goztepe will almost certainly line up in their favoured 3-4-1-2 system, a shape that has served them well all season and offers natural defensive resilience through the three centre-backs.

Dennis will sit in front of the back three alongside Simiao Gomes, tasked with screening the defence and breaking up Galatasaray’s build-up play.

That double pivot will be crucial, because Galatasaray’s midfield of Torreira and Lemina is one of the most physically imposing in the division and will look to dominate the central areas.

Stoilov’s wing-backs will need to track Baris Alper Yilmaz and Leroy Sane, both of whom are quick and direct in wide positions.

Galatasaray will set up in their usual 4-2-3-1, though the absence of Bardakci at centre-back forces a reshuffle, with Singo likely to move inside to partner Sanchez and Sallai filling in at right-back.

Without Osimhen’s pace and movement stretching the backline, Icardi offers a different threat: he is a penalty-box predator who thrives on service from the flanks.

The question is whether Galatasaray can supply him with enough quality crosses and through-balls, especially as Sane can be erratic.

Goztepe’s three-at-the-back system should allow them to match up well against Icardi, with Heliton and one of the wide centre-backs able to double up whenever the ball enters the box.

The key tactical battle will be in the transitions.

Goztepe will look to absorb pressure and hit Galatasaray on the break through the pace of Janderson and the movement of Juan, who leads the team with seven league goals this season.

If Galatasaray commit too many bodies forward, as they tend to when chasing a game, those spaces in behind could prove costly.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Betting Tips & Predictions

TIP 1 | Best Value
Under 2.5 Goals

Goztepe’s matches have averaged under 1.9 goals per game across their last 10 outings, and 63% of their league fixtures this season have finished with under 2.5 goals. With Galatasaray missing their top scorer Osimhen, they may lack their usual cutting edge in the final third. The visitors’ last two away league games have produced just three goals combined.

TIP 2
Galatasaray to Win & Under 3.5 Goals

Galatasaray have won eight straight against Goztepe and will be desperate to bounce back from the Trabzonspor loss. However, without Osimhen leading the line, a cricket-score win is unlikely. A tight 1-0 or 2-1 victory fits the profile. Combining the Galatasaray win with under 3.5 goals offers decent value.

TIP 3 | Player Prop
Mauro Icardi Anytime Scorer

With Osimhen out, the goalscoring burden falls squarely on Icardi. The Argentine has 13 league goals this season and scored in the reverse fixture against Goztepe back in October. He started and played the full match in the Trabzonspor defeat, showing he remains Buruk’s first-choice striker. As the focal point of every Galatasaray attack, he should get chances.

Final Score Prediction

Why this scoreline?
  • Galatasaray have won all eight of their last meetings with Goztepe, and 0-1 is the most common result at the Gursel Aksel (three occasions).
  • Goztepe have struggled to score at home recently, failing to find the net in four of their last seven home league games.
  • 63% of Goztepe’s league matches this season have produced under 2.5 goals, suggesting a tight, low-scoring affair.
  • Despite Osimhen’s absence, Galatasaray’s squad depth means Icardi, Sane, Baris Alper Yilmaz and Gundogan can still hurt any defence in the division.
  • The title race is too tight for Galatasaray to drop more points. Expect a professional, controlled away performance built on defensive solidity and clinical finishing.

Galatasaray’s recent wobble and their injury troubles make this a trickier assignment than the H2H record might suggest, but the quality gap between the two squads remains significant.

Icardi should relish the chance to prove he can carry the attack without Osimhen alongside him, and Buruk’s side have enough about them to grind out a result even when they are not at full strength.

Goztepe will make it uncomfortable, as they always do under Stoilov, but ultimately the visitors should have too much firepower for a side that has scored just twice in their last five home league matches.
