Victor Osimhen to Atletico Madrid: 5 reasons Nigerian star will fit Diego Simeone style

Published on by

Atletico Madrid are preparing to make a concrete move for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen ahead of what promises to be another busy summer transfer window, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Spanish giants are assessing several options as they prepare for possible changes in Diego Simeone’s squad. One of the names attracting attention inside the Wanda Metropolitano is Osimhen, who has continued to strengthen his reputation as one of Europe’s most reliable centre-forwards during his time at Turkish champions Galatasaray.

According to reports from AS, Atletico’s sporting department have already made inquiries about the Nigerian international’s situation. While no formal offer has been made, the club are understood to be monitoring developments closely, especially amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Argentine striker Julian Alvarez.

Atletico are expected to lose experienced forward Antoine Griezmann this summer, while Alvarez has attracted interest from several major clubs across Europe. French champions Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League side Arsenal have both been linked with the Argentine attacker, creating the possibility of a major reshuffle in Simeone’s attacking options.

Should Alvarez leave Madrid, Osimhen is viewed as one of the elite forwards capable of filling such a significant void. The 27-year-old has built a reputation as a physically dominant striker who combines pace, movement and clinical finishing. Having already proven himself in France, Italy, Turkey and European competition, he is regarded as a player entering the peak years of his career.

Galatasaray face challenge of keeping Victor Osimhen

Any move for Osimhen would be far from straightforward.

Galatasaray invested heavily to secure the Nigerian permanently from Napoli in 2025 after an impressive loan spell. The Turkish giants paid €75 million, making him the most expensive signing in Turkish football history. As a result, they are under little pressure to sell and are expected to demand a substantial fee from any interested club.

Osimhen remains under contract with Galatasaray until 2029 and reportedly earns around €15 million net per season, a salary that would present a significant financial commitment for any potential suitor.

The Nigerian enjoyed another productive campaign, scoring 15 goals in the Turkish Super Lig and adding seven goals in the UEFA Champions League. His 22 goals across 33 appearances pointed to why some of Europe’s biggest clubs continue to track his progress.

Victor Osimhen: Reasons why Super Eagles star will be perfect for for Atlético Madrid

If Atletico Madrid decide to move seriously for Victor Osimhen, there may be few strikers in world football better suited to Diego Simeone’s demanding style.

Simeone has built Atletico around intensity, discipline and sacrifice for more than a decade. His teams are comfortable defending deep, absorbing pressure and then striking with devastating speed when spaces open up. Every player is expected to work relentlessly, especially the forwards.

That is exactly where Osimhen stands out. The Nigerian’s greatest strength may not even be his goalscoring. Few elite strikers work as hard without the ball. He presses defenders aggressively, chases lost causes and constantly disrupts opposition build-up play. Those qualities are essential in a Simeone team, where attackers are expected to defend from the front.

His pace is another major asset. Atletico thrive when turning defence into attack within seconds, and Osimhen is one of the most dangerous runners in Europe. He attacks open spaces relentlessly and can transform a simple clearance into a goalscoring opportunity.

The 27-year-old would also give Atletico a powerful aerial weapon. Whether from crosses, corners or long passes forward, Osimhen regularly dominates centre-backs in the air. That ability is particularly valuable for a side that often relies on set-pieces and direct deliveries into the penalty area.

Physicality is another reason he appears tailor-made for Spanish football. Osimhen enjoys duels, welcomes contact and rarely backs down from a battle. That competitive edge mirrors the warrior mentality that has defined Atletico under Simeone.

Perhaps most importantly, he can operate in different attacking partnerships. Atletico frequently use two forwards, and Osimhen has the intelligence to lead the line while creating room for a more creative teammate. His movement stretches defences, opens passing lanes and creates space for others to exploit.

Put together, it is easy to understand why Atletico are monitoring him. Osimhen is undoubtedly a prolific goalscorer but, more than that, he looks like a striker built specifically for the demands of Simeone’s football.
