Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria: Confirmed Super Eagles team news and Chelle’s likely XI

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have landed in Bissau with momentum, fresh attacking heroes and a selection puzzle for Eric Chelle after a frantic opening win over Madagascar, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles completed their preparations in Uyo on Sunday morning before flying to Guinea-Bissau later that afternoon for Tuesday’s second Group L fixture.

Chelle’s squad trained in Uyo on Sunday before departing Victor Attah International Airport at about 5pm aboard a chartered ValueJet flight. The delegation landed at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport at approximately 8:40pm, giving the players less than 48 hours to acclimatise before facing the Djurtus.

The trip followed Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar on Friday, when George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time before Moses Usor struck the winner in the 65th minute.

Nigeria’s travelling squad has no fresh injury concern, leaving Chelle with virtually his entire group available for selection.

The coach is expected to conduct the final tactical session in Bissau on Monday as he weighs whether to preserve the XI that started against Madagascar or reward some of the players who changed the game from the bench.

Nwabali faces competition from Okoye

Stanley Nwabali started the Madagascar game and kept his place after returning to the squad alongside Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo.

Okoye is nevertheless pushing for a recall, after impressing in the summer as Super Eagles clashes against Poland and Portugal.

The defensive debate is even more intriguing. Semi Ajayi started Friday’s match alongside Calvin Bassey, while Bruno Onyemaechi occupied the other full-back position with Ola Aina. Chibuike Nwaiwu offers Chelle another option after earning his place in the 24-man squad through his Unity Cup performances.

The Trabzonspor centre-back is tough, physically impossible and fast, all the ingredients Chelle’s Super Eagles need to thwart all the plans of Guinea-Bissau.

Usor and Ilenikhena push for starting places

Moses Usor’s sensational debut has thrown another name into Chelle’s attacking calculations.

The LASK winger came off the bench against Madagascar and scored four minutes after entering the pitch, completing a comeback that had begun with Ilenikhena’s stoppage-time equaliser.

Ilenikhena, meanwhile, has a strong case to lead the attack again after becoming Nigeria’s first goalscorer against Madagascar.

With Victor Osimhen unavailable because of injury, Chelle also has Taiwo Awoniyi, Akor Adams and Tolu Arokodare competing for attacking minutes.

Guinea-Bissau will provide a stern test after beating Tanzania 2-0 in their opening qualifier, with Franculino Djú scoring in the 33rd minute and Mama Baldé adding the second in the 58th.

Both sides therefore enter Tuesday’s encounter with three points, while Tanzania’s status as a 2027 AFCON co-host means Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are effectively battling for the group’s available qualification place.
