Boniface: Injury-wracked Super Eagles forward set for Bundesliga stay

Victor Boniface has reportedly extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, committing to the Bundesliga champions until 2029.

The Nigeria forward, who joined the club from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023, signed the extension amid ongoing links to a January transfer.

According to reports from Sky Sports Germany, the 24-year-old’s new deal includes a significant pay increase, doubling his annual salary from €3 million to €6 million (around ₦9.5 billion).

Boniface’s impact since joining has been remarkable. He has netted 29 goals and provided 11 assists in 49 appearances. His exploits last season earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award as Leverkusen clinched the league title and DFB-Pokal while also reaching the UEFA Europa League final.

A potential January exit for Boniface?

While the contract extension signals Leverkusen’s desire to keep Boniface, reports suggest the club could still be open to a sale if offers exceed €50 million.

Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal are said to be monitoring the forward, with Liverpool viewing him as a possible alternative to Darwin Núñez amid Al-Hilal's interest in the Uruguayan.

Only Victor Osimhen (€12.82 million) earns a higher annual salary than Victor Boniface (€6 million) among Nigerian footballers. AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze follows with €5.13 million, while Moses Simon collects €2.4 million annually at Nantes.

In the Premier League, Fulham stars Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey earn £4.16 million and £2.34 million per year, respectively.

The Super Eagles forward has been sidelined since suffering an injury on international duty with Nigeria in November 2024.

On Tuesday, he was an unused substitute in Leverkusen's 2-1 loss to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, raising questions about his fitness ahead of the January window closing.
