‘It feels like an opportunity missed’ – Iwobi on Fulham defeat

Published on by

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has encouraged his Fulham teammates to maintain their determination in order to rise in the standings following their defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The London outfit suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Saturday, with the Nigerian international getting a consolation for the Cottagers.

The goal was Iwobi's sixth of the season and a testament to his superb form for Fulham upon his return from international duty with Nigeria at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) in Ivory Coast.

The 27-year-old seems to have overcome the calumny he was subjected to by Super Eagles fans after Nigeria's loss to Ivory Coast in the AFCON final.

Iwobi laments missed opportunity in Fulham defeat

Iwobi reflected on Fulham's Saturday defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, expressing his disappointment at the missed opportunity.

“It feels like an opportunity missed, we had an opportunity to be clinical, but it wasn’t the case,” Iwobi remarked.

He acknowledged the importance of maintaining concentration throughout the entire match, noting, “We lost concentration and focus and we spoke about it after the game.

“We need to be concentrated for the full ninety minutes. We can’t switch off at this stage, we go again.”

Despite the defeat, Iwobi expressed his confidence in the team and praised the support of the club's manager: “I enjoy playing under the gaffer and he gives me the confidence to keep going and play my football, so hopefully, the next goal will be on the winning side.

“It’s a bit of good form, and hopefully it can continue.”

Iwobi named in Super Eagles squad

The Fulham man has been named in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali later this month in Morocco.

The Super Eagles are set to face the Black Stars on March 22, followed by a match against the Eagles four days later.

Iwobi's inclusion in the squad marks his return to the national team following a period of cyberbullying and backlash from fans after the AFCON final.

The midfielder received significant criticism, leading him to delete his Instagram account.

However, Iwobi has since reactivated his account, signalling his readiness to return to action and represent his country once again on the international stage.
