Iwobi: Super Eagles star achieves historic milestone, joins ranks of African legends

Alex Iwobi's Fulham played out a dramatic 2-2 stalemate against visiting Ipswich Town on Sunday at Craven Cottage.

Iwobi likely wasn't pleased with Fulham's result against Ipswich Town on Sunday, but the midfielder found personal consolation in achieving a new record.

The Hale End academy graduate has joined an exclusive group of African players by surpassing 50 Premier League appearances for three different clubs.

Which African players has Iwobi joined in this exclusive club?

Iwobi has become the fifth African player to achieve the remarkable feat of making 50 or more Premier League appearances for three different clubs. This accomplishment places him in esteemed company alongside some of Africa's finest footballing talents.

Nigerian legend, Nwankwo Kanu, renowned for his stints with Arsenal, Portsmouth, and West Brom.

Senegal's El Hadji Diouf, who left his mark at Bolton, Blackburn, and Liverpool, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, a key figure at Everton, Middlesbrough, and Portsmouth, and Mohamed Diamé, who impressed at Wigan, West Ham, and Newcastle, all share this distinguished milestone.

Iwobi's Premier League journey: From Arsenal to Everton and Fulham

Iwobi said goodbye to boyhood club Arsenal in summer of 2019, moving northwards from the English capital to Merseyside, where he joined Everton for a princely €30.4 million.

That fee remains the highest a Premier League club has ever paid for Nigerian talent. Across Europe, only the €75m spent by Napoli to bring Victor Osimhen from Lille a year later eclipses that expense, and it pretty much underlines just how esteemed Iwobi is.

It's fair to say Everton got decent returns on their investment, with Iwobi proving instrumental, especially in the last couple of seasons, as the Toffees clung to their unblemished Premier League status.

That much is reflected in the club's Players’ Player of the Year award picked up last two seasons, just before heading back to London — this time in the west, on the books of Fulham.

Since joining Fulham, the 28-year-old has made 55 appearances for the club, contributing 11 goals and providing five assists for his teammates.
