Lazio’s engine stalls as road runner Dele-Bashiru sits out Coppa Italia exit

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was absent as Lazio's Coppa Italia campaign came to an abrupt end with a 2-0 quarter-final defeat to Inter Milan. Marko Arnautovic broke the deadlock late in the first half with a thunderous strike, while Hakan Calhanoglu sealed the win from the penalty spot.

Marco Baroni’s men struggled to create clear-cut chances and sorely missed the presence of Dele-Bashiru, who was sidelined due to injury. The Nigerian midfielder, who had been handed a rare start in Lazio’s previous match against Venezia, was absent after suffering a knee injury in that encounter.

Initially expected to miss just two games, further tests confirmed a more extended absence of around 20 days, ruling him out of crucial fixtures in March.

In Dele-Bashiru’s absence, 23-year-old Nicolò Rovella filled the midfield role, but Lazio lacked the creative spark needed to trouble the Nerazzurri’s disciplined defense. With their Coppa Italia journey over, the Biancocelesti must now turn their attention to securing a top-four finish in Serie A and progressing in the Europa League.

Dele-Bashiru's influence before injury

Before his injury setback, Dele-Bashiru had been quietly making an impact in Lazio’s midfield. The 24-year-old has featured 16 times in Serie A this season, starting six matches and scoring three goals.

His composed passing and ability to dictate play in tight spaces have been key assets, boasting an impressive 91% pass accuracy.

Against Venezia, he was given an opportunity to start in midfield due to Rovella’s suspension but was forced off after just 41 minutes following a collision with Alessio Zerbin. Though he attempted to continue, the discomfort proved too much, leading to his substitution.

His absence now presents a challenge for Lazio, as they navigate a crucial stretch of the season without one of their emerging midfield talents.
