Super Eagles no.10 Dele-Bashiru limps off in Lazio draw ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has been handed a fresh selection headache after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru suffered an injury in Lazio’s barren draw with Venezia on Saturday.

With just weeks to go before Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, the midfielder’s setback could disrupt Chelle’s plans as he looks to revive Nigeria’s faltering campaign.

The 24-year-old was handed a rare start in midfield due to Nico Rovella’s suspension but lasted only 41 minutes before being forced off. A collision with Alessio Zerbin in the 36th minute left him struggling, and despite briefly continuing, he eventually signalled for a substitution, with Reda Belahyane taking his place.

Before his withdrawal, Dele-Bashiru had been tidy in possession, completing 24 of his 26 passes (92%) and recording 30 touches. He attempted one key pass, delivered one accurate long ball, and registered an effort off target. Defensively, he won none of his duels but made one clearance.

Dele-Bashiru injury deepens Nigeria’s midfield worries

Dele-Bashiru has featured 16 times in Serie A this season, starting six matches and scoring three goals. His passing reliability has been a standout attribute, averaging 91% accuracy. However, his latest injury raises questions over his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures.

The Super Eagles find themselves in a difficult position in Group C, sitting fifth with three points from four matches. Eric Chelle‘s side remain winless in the campaign, having recorded three draws and one loss.

With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, securing maximum points next month is imperative.
