Lille vs Galatasaray: Why Osimhen and teammates face extra security measures in France

Published on by

Lille vs Galatasaray is a fixture dear to Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen’s heart following his emotional connection to the two European clubs.

Still, Osimhen and his Galatasaray teammates will face an unusual challenge ahead of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Lille on Wednesday.

This development comes after reports confirmed that the Turkish champions have raised concerns about their security in France ahead of the clash.

The Lille vs Galatasaray match at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy is scheduled for 5:45 pm WAT. Interestingly, Galatasaray are reportedly seeking a postponement or a change of venue following unrest across several French cities.

Lille vs Galatasaray: France’s security response

France experienced widespread protests, looting and clashes with police over the weekend of October 17-18. Reuters reported that Lille was among the cities affected, with the official Lille club store vandalised and looted. Localised curfews were also introduced in parts of France.

Following that situation, Galatasaray developed concerns centred on the safety of their players, staff and travelling supporters as they prepare to visit Lille. Reports circulating this week claimed that the Istanbul club contacted UEFA to request either a postponement or relocation to a neutral venue.

UEFA, however, reportedly rejected the request with the Lille vs Galatasaray clash expected to proceed as scheduled.

The football governing body is convinced there are enough security measures in place to protect all the players involved, including Super Eagles superstar Victor Osimhen.

This decision steps from the French government’s immediate response to the wider unrest, including local security restrictions. Galatasaray may, however, need to confirm that their arrangements for the team’s journey, hotel stay, training and matchday movements will be not affected by the French unrest.

Any additional travel restrictions or security measures could also complicate preparations, particularly for supporters arriving from Turkey.

Osimhen’s Lille reunion

Despite the security concerns, Victor Osimhen would be excited ahead of the Lille vs Galatasaray meeting.

The fixture represents a personal milestone for the Super Eagles star, who enjoyed a productive spell at Lille during the 2019-20 season.

The Nigerian striker scored 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions, including two in the Champions League, before moving to Napoli in 2020. He also won the Marc-Vivien Foe award for being the best African player in the French Ligue 1 that season.

It was at Lille that His reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards blew through the roof and convinced Napoli to pay a record fee for the then 21-year-old.

It could also bring Osimhen silent pleasure to open his Champions League account this season in the Lille vs Galatasaray fixture. The Nigeria international missed Galatasaray’s earlier clash with Sporting CP and fired blanks in the 4-1 defeat to Barcelona last week.

Interestingly, Osimhen may not be pleased that Lille are considered favourites to claim a big win over Galatasaray on Wednesday.
