Nigeria forward, Ademola Lookman has expressed gratitude for the camaraderie in the Super Eagles squad, which he says helped make his transition from representing England to Nigeria effortless.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Lookman initially represented England at youth levels, notably winning the U20 World Cup in 2017 with three goals to his name. However, he opted to switch to Nigeria five years later, officially joining the Super Eagles in 2022.
Lookman’s journey to the Super Eagles wasn’t without challenges, including missing the 2021 AFCON due to FIFA clearance delays. Yet, he quickly adapted, helped by the welcoming attitude of his teammates. Since committing to Nigeria, Lookman has consistently impressed with his ability on the ball.
Osimhen and other teammates’ support key to transition
“When I first joined the Super Eagles, I was very glad there was a group of people that welcomed me and were very loving to me and took me in as one of their own,” Lookman told the BBC. “It’s a dream and an honor to be here, to be able to wear that badge on my chest.”
The former Everton youngster emphasized the role of Victor Osimhen, whose support and guidance have been crucial in his adjustment. “Now, some people speak Yoruba to me,” Lookman shared.
“If somebody wants to tell me something, they tell me in Yoruba. Like Victor Osimhen, he would speak to me in Yoruba. But sometimes, if he says something to me in Yoruba, and I can reply in Yoruba, then I say it.”
After a strong 2023/2024 season with Atalanta and Nigeria, Lookman has been named a finalist for CAF Player of the Year.
