‘Disrespected’ Lookman responds to Gasperini penalty jibe, explains Atalanta teammates were scared

Ademola Lookman has spoken out after Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini publicly criticized him for missing a penalty in their 3-1 Champions League playoff defeat to Club Brugge.

The Nigeria international was not Atalanta’s designated penalty taker on the night, that role belonged to Matteo Retegui. However, having already missed twice this season, once against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League and once in Serie A against Torino Retegui opted out, leaving Lookman to step up.

Prior to Tuesday night, the 27-year-old had only taken one penalty for Atalanta and scored it.

The forward, making his return from a six-week injury layoff, had given Atalanta hope by scoring just 35 seconds into the second half. However, his missed penalty in the 61st minute allowed Club Brugge to maintain control.

Lookman fires back at Gasperini

Following Gasperini’s remarks, Lookman took to social media to express his disappointment.

“Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.

“During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty; and to support the team, I took responsibility in the moment to do so.”

Lookman has been one of Atalanta’s top performers in Europe this season, scoring five goals and providing two assists in seven Champions League appearances this season. His contributions were key in their journey to this stage of the competition.

With top clubs already monitoring him, Gasperini’s comments could have long-term consequences, potentially pushing Lookman toward an exit from Bergamo this summer.
