Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has found himself at the centre of a media storm following a dramatic turn of events during Atalanta's UEFA Champions League play-off clash with Belgian side Club Brugge.

The match, which saw Atalanta trailing 3-1 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate, took an unexpected twist when the Italian side was awarded a penalty, offering a glimmer of hope for a comeback.

In a bold move, Lookman, who is not Atalanta's designated penalty taker, stepped up to take the spot kick.

Unfortunately, he missed, sealing Atalanta's elimination from the competition.

The miss drew the wrath of coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who publicly criticized the forward, labelling him the “worst penalty taker” he had ever seen.

Tensions escalated in Bergamo as the coach's harsh words sparked a wave of reactions from fans and pundits alike.

Lookman: Support from brands and organisations

In response to the criticism, Lookman took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his side of the story.

His statement garnered widespread support from fans and football enthusiasts, many of whom rallied behind the 26-year-old forward.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) showed solidarity with the reigning CAF Player of the Year by posting clips of his performances on the Super Eagles' official X account.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also joined in, sharing videos of his heroics for Nigeria at the last Africa Cup of Nations.

Satellite television company DStv, which broadcasts the UEFA Champions League in Nigeria, joined the chorus of support, expressing their backing for the Atalanta man on their official X handle.

Lookman: Strength from a legend and an international colleague

Former Italy international Alessandro Del Piero weighed in on the controversy, expressing his disapproval of Gasperini's comments.

“Regardless of the internal dynamics, I wouldn't have taken Gasperini's words in the post-match well,” Del Piero told Sky Sports.

Super Eagles and Hoffenheim forward Gift Orban also showed support for Lookman, commenting on his X post.
