Lookman: Super Eagles star shares injury update ahead of Atletico vs Arsenal clash

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has shared a timely update on his fitness ahead of Atletico Madrid’s UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg against Arsenal on Wednesday, Afrik-Foot reports.

Los Rojiblancos will host the Premier League leaders at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano and there is growing optimism around Lookman’s availability for the crucial encounter.

The Nigerian winger had been very influential during the Copa del Rey final on April 18, scoring Atletico’s only goal and the decision to take him off around the 62nd minute was met with mixed reactions given his impact on the game. 

However, post-match reports later revealed that Lookman had been dealing with an injury, which has forced him to miss Atletico’s last two league matches and also cast doubt over his involvement against Arsenal.

The former Atalanta forward scored the crucial goal in their Champions League quarter-final tie against Barcelona, which sealed their spot in the semifinal for the first time in nine years. He scored Atletico’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat in the second leg, although they progressed 3-2 on aggregate thanks to a healthy advantage from their first leg encounter.

Ademola Lookman set for return against Arsenal

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman is now in contention to make his return to action and it could not come at a better time for Atletico Madrid, considering his impact since joining the club.

The 28-year-old arrived from Atalanta during the winter transfer window in a €35 million deal and has quickly established himself as one of the team’s standout performers. Since his arrival, only Julian Alvarez has recorded more goal contributions than his tally of 11 across all competitions.

Speaking ahead of the Arsenal clash, the Nigerian forward confirmed he is feeling much better after his recent setback.

“I missed the last few matches, but now I feel much better”, the Nigerian said.

Lookman’s return is a major boost for Atletico Madrid, especially with the Champions League representing their only remaining chance of silverware this season. 

However, it remains unclear whether Diego Simeone will hand him a place in the starting lineup or ease him back into action from the bench for such an important game of the season.
