Two reasons Marseille may look to this Super Eagles striker to replace Fenerbahce-bound Greenwood

Published on by

French Ligue 1 side Marseille are set to sell star forward Mason Greenwood to Süper Lig giants Fenerbahçe for a fee in the region of €50 million, Afrik-Foot reports.

This move represents a major deal for both clubs, as it is expected to break their respective transfer records.

For Marseille, the current record sale is Michy Batshuayi, who joined Chelsea for €39 million in 2016. For Fenerbahçe, the record purchase is Mattéo Guendouzi, who was acquired from Lazio for €28 million in January.

Greenwood’s departure will undoubtedly impact the Phocéens, as the former Manchester United man has been a standout performer since arriving two years ago. During his time at the club, he has contributed 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances.

His exit leaves a significant void in Fenerbahçe’s attack, but the substantial windfall from the transfer will allow Marseille to reinvest in a new striker this summer. In this piece, Afrik-Foot explores one Nigerian forward the former Ligue 1 champions could target to fill that gap.

Which Super Eagles Striker Should Marseille Sign as Greenwood’s Replacement?

The Super Eagles striker Marseille should consider to provide a boost for the upcoming season is Terem Moffi. The forward is currently searching for a new club, with OGC Nice having confirmed their intention to part ways with him.

While Moffi may not be a direct tactical replacement for the Englishman, he would certainly add quality to the attack.

Firstly, Moffi possesses extensive Ligue 1 experience, having played for both Lorient and Nice. He has been a fixture in French football for the last five years and has enjoyed several prolific spells in the country.

Also, Moffi is available for an affordable fee. OGC Nice sporting director Roger Ricort recently confirmed that the striker would be leaving this summer, and with only one year remaining on his contract, the club is eager to facilitate a sale.

Consequently, Marseille could negotiate a favorable deal. Although he is currently valued at €8 million on Transfermarkt, the price could potentially be even lower.

At 27, the Nigerian striker still has several peak years ahead of him. His versatility — capable of playing as a central striker or in a secondary role behind a point man — could make this a shrewd move for Les Phocéens. However, as of now, the club has not been explicitly linked with the player.
