Nigeria: 3 new Premier League stories to watch in 2026-27 – Akintola, Yohanna & Fredrick

Published on by

The 2026-27 Premier League season is about to open with a new group of Nigerian stories, Afrik-Foot reports.

The familiar names will attract most of the attention, but three less-established players have paths that could make them just as interesting to follow.

David Akintola has taken the longest route. At 30, the Hull City winger is finally preparing to play in England’s top division after building his career across several European leagues. His story is about persistence and a second chance at the highest level.

Zadok Yohanna sits at the other end of the scale. The teenager has gone from a Nigerian academy to Swedish football and then Brighton in little more than a year. Benjamin Fredrick is somewhere in between. He has already played senior football for Nigeria and spent three years developing inside Brentford’s system. Now he has been promoted to the first team.

Their stories are different, but the target is the same and that is to turn a Premier League opportunity into a proper place in the competition.

Born in Oyo in January 1996, Akintola started at FC Ebedei before moving to Denmark and joining FC Midtjylland’s system in 2014. He spent much of his early professional career on loan, moving between Denmark and Norway before establishing himself in European top-flight football.

His breakthrough came in Norway. He scored eight goals for Jerv in 2017 and nine for Haugesund in 2018. Further moves took him to Rosenborg, Omonia, Hatayspor, Adana Demirspor and Çaykur Rizespor. That experience eventually brought him to Hull in August 2025.

Akintola made 20 Championship appearances in 2025-26 as Hull won promotion through the playoffs. Now he is facing a new challenge at 30: his first Premier League appearance.

Yohanna’s rapid rise

Yohanna’s route has been much quicker. He developed in Nigeria before moving to AIK in Sweden in 2025. His progress there was rapid. He moved from youth football into the senior side and produced five goals and four assists in his first 12 league appearances.

Brighton then moved quickly, signing him on a five-year contract this June. The 18-year-old’s pace and ability to beat defenders convinced the club to invest in him, but Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler has stressed that he still needs time to adjust to Premier League football.

Yohanna is already in Brighton’s squad for the opening weekend. That makes his first Premier League minutes a possibility, even though his development is still at an early stage.

Fredrick gets his Brentford chance

Fredrick’s journey began at Simoiben Football Academy in Nigeria before spells with ABS FC and Nasarawa United gave him senior football experience. Brentford brought him to England on loan in August 2023, when he was 18.

The centre-back initially admitted he was nervous and struggled to adjust to life in England. Brentford’s B-team coaches helped him develop his game and confidence. He eventually became an important player in the club’s youth setup before gaining international experience with Nigeria.

After a loan spell with Belgian club Dender was cut short by injury, Fredrick returned to Brentford. A few weeks ago, the club promoted him to the first team and gave him a new four-year contract. He was named among Brentford’s substitutes for their opening Premier League game against Tottenham.

The next step is the one Fredrick has been working towards since arriving in west London: his first competitive Premier League minutes.
