Hamburg transfer: How Moffi’s Super Eagles form opened door to Bundesliga move

Published on by

Terem Moffi’s summer changed quickly. The Nigeria international had spent much of the 2025-26 club season fighting for regular playing time, Afrik-Foot reports.

At OGC Nice, he played only ten Ligue 1 matches and scored twice in 489 minutes, before leaving for Portugal during the winter transfer window. His situation became more difficult after a loan spell at FC Porto ended without a permanent move. Nice made it clear that the Nigerian forward, who was a target of Turkey’s Samsunspor, was not welcomed back at the club.

Then came the Super Eagles. A strong run of international games in May and June gave Moffi a fresh platform. He provided two assists against Zimbabwe, scored against Jamaica in the Unity Cup final and then scored again against Poland in Warsaw.

Now, that international run has been followed by a major club opportunity. According to transfer reporter Florian Plettenberg, Moffi is travelling to Hamburg for a medical ahead of a move from Nice to Hamburger SV. The report says the clubs have reached a verbal agreement for a deal worth €2 million up front, with another €500,000 in possible add-ons.

If the medical is successful and the paperwork is completed, the 27-year-old is expected to sign until 2029 and become Hamburg’s new No. 9. The path to Germany can be traced back to what Moffi, once on the radar of Besiktas, did in a Nigeria shirt.

Two assists against Zimbabwe started the revival

Moffi’s first big moment came on May 26 at The Valley in London. Nigeria faced Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final, with Eric Chelle using Moffi as the experienced striker and stand-in captain. The Super Eagles won 2-0, with Femi Azeez scoring both goals.

The former Kauno Žalgiris man did not score, but he played a key part in the attack. He supplied two assists as Nigeria moved into the final. That meant his contribution was not limited to finishing chances. He was also creating goals for his team-mates.

The performance was important because Moffi arrived at the international camp after a difficult club season at OGC Nice and Porto. His two assists against Zimbabwe gave him an immediate response on the international stage. Four days later, he went one step further.

Moffi scored in the Unity Cup final

Nigeria faced Jamaica at The Valley on May 30. The Super Eagles were defending their Unity Cup title, and Moffi wore the captain’s armband. Nigeria won 3-0 to claim the trophy for the fourth time. Alhassan Yusuf scored after only three minutes. Nigeria controlled the game and kept Jamaica under pressure.

Then Moffi struck. In the 59th minute, Femi Azeez delivered the ball into the area and Moffi headed it into the net. The goal made it 2-0 and put Nigeria in a strong position to win the final. Yusuf added a third goal in stoppage time.

Moffi finished the Unity Cup with two assists and a goal in Nigeria’s two matches. His role was also larger than his numbers. He captained the team and helped lead Chelle’s side to another trophy. That form gave him another chance against stronger opposition a few days later.

Poland provided another test, and Moffi scored again

Nigeria travelled to Warsaw to face Poland on June 3. The match at PGE Narodowy drew 54,408 fans. Poland had players such as Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski, while Nigeria started Moffi at centre-forward.

Again, he delivered. In the 23rd minute, Moses Simon supplied the pass and Moffi finished to put Nigeria ahead. The goal was first questioned for offside, but VAR confirmed it.

Nigeria eventually led 2-1 after Paul Onuachu converted a penalty in the 77th minute. Poland rescued a 2-2 draw with Przemysław Wiśniewski’s long-range strike in the fifth minute of added time.

Moffi’s goal, however, gave him three goal contributions in his first three international matches of the summer: two assists against Zimbabwe, a goal against Jamaica and another goal against Poland. That sequence came after a season in which his opportunities at club level had been limited.

From a difficult club season to a Bundesliga chance

Moffi’s club numbers explain why his Nigeria performances mattered. While the former Lorient forward struggled for goals in France and Portugal, his international form offered a different picture. The run did not happen in a low-pressure setting. It came across a competition final and an international friendly against a European side with several established players.

Hamburg’s interest followed in the weeks after that international run. Reports first linked the Bundesliga club with the former Kortrijk striker in August, with Hamburg looking for another striker.

The deal then moved closer. FussballTransfers reported on August 19 that Hamburg had reached an agreement with Nice over Moffi, although talks with the player were still continuing at that stage. Plettenberg’s latest report now says the Nigerian is travelling to Hamburg for his medical. It puts the fixed transfer fee at €2 million, with €500,000 in add-ons, and says the total package could reach €2.5 million.

Hamburg could give Moffi the stage he needs

The proposed move would give Moffi another chance in one of Europe’s major leagues. Hamburg are back in the Bundesliga and are preparing for another top-flight campaign. Their first league game of the 2026-27 season is against Borussia Dortmund on August 29. The club’s current transfer plans already include Zambia forward Patson Daka, but Hamburg are still looking to strengthen their attack.

Moffi could now enter that competition as a player with something to prove. His recent Nigeria form has provided the strongest evidence that he can still make an impact in front of goal. The next step is the medical in Hamburg.

If ex-Riteriai star passes it and completes the move, his Nigeria revival will have taken him from a difficult spell at Nice to a Bundesliga opportunity in the space of a few months. His challenge then becomes to turn the confidence he found with the Super Eagles into goals in Germany.
