Nigeria U23: 4 things Eric Chelle must get right to end Olympic qualification failure

Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles are starting another attempt to reach the Games, and Eric Chelle has already begun putting his team together, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles coach, who also has responsibility for the U23 side, has appointed Bright Osehai Ozebagbe and Deniran Ortega as his assistants. Chelle has described the pair as two of Nigeria’s promising young coaches with impressive profiles. He is also expected to add a foreign scout and another foreign assistant.

The appointments come after Nigeria missed the last two men’s Olympic football tournaments. The latest failure was particularly painful. In March 2023, Nigeria drew 0-0 with Guinea in Abuja before losing 2-0 in Rabat. Algassime Bah scored in the 61st minute and Alseny Soumah added another in the 73rd minute, sending Guinea through to the U23 AFCON and ending Nigeria’s hopes of reaching Paris 2024.

Nigeria have a strong Olympic history to protect. The country won gold at Atlanta 1996, silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016. That Rio tournament was the last time the men’s team appeared at the Games. The next chance comes through the 2027 U23 AFCON in Egypt, which will serve as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Chelle therefore has little room for mistakes. Nigeria have received a bye into the second qualifying round, where they will face the winner of Mauritania vs DR Congo. The first leg is scheduled for November 9, 2026, with the return in Nigeria on November 17. If they advance, another two-legged tie in March 2027 will decide whether they reach the U23 AFCON.

Get the player selection right

Chelle must build the team around players who can handle African U23 football, not simply pick the most famous names available.

The squad needs a strong spine, with a goalkeeper who commands his box, defenders comfortable under pressure, midfielders who can win second balls and attackers capable of creating chances when matches become tight.

The coach also needs to identify players early enough for them to understand his system. Last-minute selections would leave too much work for a team facing two-leg knockout ties.

Build a serious scouting network

This is where the planned foreign scout could become important. Chelle needs information before Nigeria play Mauritania, DR Congo or any later opponent. Their recent matches, set pieces, attacking patterns, defensive weaknesses and individual threats should be studied well before the first whistle.

Nigeria cannot afford another situation where the opposition looks better prepared. Guinea’s victory in Rabat in 2023 exposed how quickly an Olympic campaign can disappear when a team fails to solve the problems in front of it.

Give the team enough preparation

The Olympic Eagles cannot be treated like a side that meets only when a qualifier arrives.

Chelle needs early camps, meaningful friendly matches and enough training time for Ozebagbe and Ortega to establish clear roles. The team must practise playing away from home, defending leads and chasing results.

That matters because every qualifying round is played over two legs. Nigeria will enter the second round in November, then potentially face another two-match tie in March.

Treat every qualifying match as decisive

Nigeria’s route is shorter than that of many teams because they received a second-round bye. But that advantage means little if Chelle’s team wastes it.

Nigeria will meet either DR Congo or Mauritania in November. If they advance, they must survive another two-leg tie in March 2027. Only seven teams from the qualifiers will join hosts Egypt at the U23 AFCON finals.

Chelle must therefore approach the campaign with a knockout mentality. A poor first leg cannot be brushed aside, and a narrow home victory cannot automatically be treated as enough. Nigeria need control across 180 minutes, because this campaign is their route back to the Olympics.
