Nigeria: Italy pay tribute as Okoye dies after on-pitch collision

Published on by

Italy have confirmed the tragic death of Nigerian midfielder Emmanuel King Okoye, who died after suffering a serious head injury during a match, Afrik-Foot reports.

Okoye, born in 2000, had returned to Nigeria to spend time with his family, a visit meant to offer rest and reconnection away from the demands of football in Europe. Instead, it ended in devastating fashion.

Reports from Italian outlet Notiziario del Calcio and local authorities, including the City of Canicattini Police Department, confirmed that the midfielder was involved in a heavy collision during a game on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The impact caused him to fall awkwardly, striking his head violently on the ground.

Witnesses say Okoye collapsed immediately and lost consciousness because of the severity of the injury. Emergency responders on the scene acted quickly, providing urgent medical care before he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite these efforts, he could not be revived.

Emmanuel Okoye: A career remembered, a life cut short

Okoye’s passing has been particularly painful in Italy, where he built much of his football journey across the amateur and lower leagues. Though not a household name, he was widely respected within his circles for his dedication, discipline, and love for the game.

During his career, he featured for several clubs including Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport. His time with Giallorossi side Città di Canicattini during the 2018–2019 season remains especially memorable.

In an emotional tribute as per La Sicilia, his former club said:

“The Pol.D. City of Canicattini is mourning. Yesterday, April 29, while playing a match in Nigeria, in what was supposed to be a time of peace and family reunion, former Canary striker Emmanuel King Okoye tragically lost his life at the age of just 25.

“A former player of Acri and Palmese, Emmanuel wore the Giallorossi jersey in the 2018-2019 season. He distinguished himself with his commitment, integrity, and passion for football.

“Now all that remains are memories, from the superlative goal he scored in Mazzarrone to the filial bond that bound him to Massimo Ficara another angel, just like him, who passed who passed away too soon.

“The president, the management, the coaching staff, and all the Canarian athletes join the Okoye family in condoling. Farewell, Emmanuel.”

Teammates and coaches have described him as respectful, hardworking, and always smiling, traits that earned him admiration beyond the pitch.
