Nigerian striker scores first goal of the season in Belgium

GRC Genk of Belgium and Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare has opened his goals account for the season, though his KRC Genk side was defeated 3-1 away in the Belgian topflight.

The ‘Genkies' travelled to Leuven with hopes of reversing their poor start to the season but faced a determined OH Leuven side.

The home team took the lead in the 22nd minute through Youssef Maziz, assisted by Maartens. They doubled their advantage in the 36th minute with a goal from Thibault Vlietinck, putting the game out of Genk's reach.

Genk performed better in the second half, exerting pressure in an attempt to salvage something from the game.

Tolu Arokodare opens goals account for the season

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare scored for Genk in the 62nd minute, capitalizing on a cross from his compatriot Collins Sor, who was making a return to the team after an injury.

Despite Genk's efforts to find an equalizer, it was Leuven who scored next. Icelandic winger Jón Dagur Þorsteinsson secured the victory for Leuven with a fine finish in the 85th minute, making it 3-1 and ensuring all three points for his team.

Former Flying Eagles forward Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi made his debut for Leuven, coming on as a substitute for Thibault Vlietinck in the 69th minute.

Additionally, Manuel Osifo, who has Nigerian heritage, also came on as a substitute for Leuven.

After two matchdays in the new Belgian season, Genk finds themselves in 13th place with just one point, while OH Leuven is in second place with four points, trailing leaders Westerlo by two points.
