Nnadi gets brief cameo as Marseille seal 1-0 win over Auxerre

Super Eagles midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi came off the bench for the final six minutes to help Olympique Marseille seal a 1-0 win over Auxerre, Afrik Foot reports.

Habib Beye’s side welcomed an out-of-form Auxerre to the Velodrome. The away side had been without a win in their last three games.

While the one-time UEFA Champions League winners are pressing towards a Champions League spot, Auxerre’s priority is safety from relegation, and that was evident in their gameplay.

Marseille vs Auxerre: How the game went

The game started in a somewhat slow fashion as both sides looked to cancel each other out.

A series of fouls from the Auxerre players didn’t let the game get into full flow, but it was only a matter of time before the crowd at the Orange Stadium chanted energy into the Marseille players.

The game’s first clear-cut chance came in the 27th minute after Igor Paixão’s cross found Mason Greenwood on the edge of the box, but the attempt of the former Manchester United forward was too high.

Facundo Medina came close to heading home just before the end of the first half from a corner kick, but his shot was just wide.

The game opened up after the restart as more chances came Marseille’s way, most of which fell to Mason Greenwood, Aubameyang and Igor Paixão.

Amine Gouiri replaced former Manchester City centre-back CJ Egan-Riley in the second half as Habib Beye took a gamble to attack more.

17 minutes later, that decision paid off as Gouiri scored the only goal of the game. The Algerian forward slammed the ball home after a ricochet fell into his path in the Auxerre box.

Auxerre tried to stage a late drama, but the Marseille manager brought Nnadi on to steady the ship for the final six minutes as they claimed a third league win on the bounce.

Marseille are currently third on the French Ligue 1 table, seven points behind second-placed RC Lens.
