Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has shared his deep connection to his fatherland, describing his pride in representing Nigeria and his excitement for the future under a new coach.
Born in Düsseldorf, Germany to a Nigerian Igbo father and a German mother, Okoye chose to represent Nigeria on the international stage. He made his Super Eagles debut as a substitute in a 1-1 friendly draw against Brazil in October 2019.
The 25-year-old was an unused substitute in Nigeria's 3-0 victory over Benin during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, with Stanley Nwabali taking the position between the posts.
Okoye made his return to the Super Eagles squad for the June 2026 World Cup qualifiers, marking his comeback after a hiatus following the conclusion of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Okoye on embracing his Nigerian heritage and preparing for global success
Okoye in a recent interview with The Italian Football Podcast opened up about his pride in wearing the green and white jersey, his dreams of playing in the World Cup, and how training with top strikers has been instrumental in honing his skills and preparing him for success on the global stage.
“Yeah, like you said we are in a difficult situation right now. But when we all meet up in the national team camp it’s a great vibe, family vibes. I’m sure that we will get to our goal,” Okoye spoke about Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
“We have a new coach, so we are looking forward to what’s coming. It would mean the world [to play for Nigeria at the World Cup]. I grew up watching the Super Eagles.”
“When my father came home from Nigeria, he always brought Okocha jerseys. To represent my fatherland is a dream. At a big tournament like the World Cup would be more special,” he continued.
“I never considered playing for Germany. It was always Nigeria. I grew up in Germany, but the house was Nigerian with my father the leader at home. I didn’t have to make a decision, it was always Nigeria.”
“Honestly, in general, not just our attackers, our squad is unbelievably strong but yeah as you mention our strikers, I have tough working days facing them.”
“To train with top strikers like them helps me learn.”
Since his debut, Okoye has represented the Super Eagles on 16 occasions.
