Ola Aina has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest this season, emerging as a key player in Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.
However, while Forest appear eager to tie the Nigeria international down to a long-term deal, doing so could limit his potential to excel on a larger stage.
At 28 years old and in the prime of his career, Aina's performances this season have showcased his ability to compete at the very highest level.
Given the vacancies in defense at several top clubs across Europe, staying at Forest may not be the best move for the former Torino defender.
Aina’s stellar 2024/2025 season
This season, Aina has started all 18 Premier League games for the Tricky Trees, becoming an indispensable figure in their backline.
The Nigerian has impressed in both full-back roles, beginning the season as a left-back before transitioning to the right side. His ambidexterity and comfort on both feet have been instrumental in Forest's climb into the top four, as they aim to challenge for European football.
Defensively, Aina has excelled in one-on-one duels, averaging 2.6 clearances, 2.0 tackles, and 1.3 interceptions per game. He has also recovered possession 5.6 times per match while being dribbled past just 0.8 times on average.
His ability to read the game and dominate the defensive third has been pivotal for Forest in what has been a challenging schedule.
In attack, Aina has contributed with two goals this season, one from inside the box and another from outside while maintaining a 29% conversion rate. His expected goals (xG) figure of 0.58 underscores his clinical nature when opportunities arise.
Additionally, he has created two big chances, completed 55.2 touches per game, and maintained a passing accuracy of 81%.
Why Forest may not be enough
Aina’s performances this season have proven that he belongs on a bigger stage.
While Forest’s history as two-time European champions is admirable, their current status as an mid-table Premier League side, albeit an upwardly mobile one this season, would limit Aina’s potential to achieve more significant accolades.
Forest’s ambition and Nuno’s tactical system have allowed Aina to thrive, but with top clubs looking for reinforcements in the full-back positions, the Nigerian must seize the opportunity to elevate his career.
Vacancies at top clubs
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side could present a perfect opportunity for Aina. Kyle Walker, who will be 35 by the end of the season, is nearing the twilight of his career.
Although Walker remains an integral part of the squad, City are likely to seek his long-term successor soon.
Aina’s versatility, physicality, and defensive instincts make him a natural fit for Guardiola’s system, where full-backs are expected to defend and contribute to build-up play.
Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool is under intense scrutiny, with reports suggesting that the England international could leave for Real Madrid next summer.
Should Alexander-Arnold depart, Liverpool would need a reliable, defensively solid replacement.
Aina’s consistent performances and ability to thrive in high-pressure situations could make him an ideal candidate for Arne Slot’s side.
Aston Villa
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have emerged as a serious contender for European football, but there remain concerns over Matty Cash’s long-term suitability as their first-choice right-back.
Villa’s staff have retained doubts about Cash’s defensive consistency, making Aina a potential upgrade.
The club’s ambitions for European competitions align with Aina’s desire to compete at the highest level, and a move to Villa Park could allow him to taste elite European competition.
