Southampton manager Russell Martin has commended Paul Onuachu for his impressive resilience and dedication.
The Super Eagles forward rejoined Southampton following an impressive loan spell with Turkish side Trabzonspor last season.
The stint to the Super Lig side proved beneficial for Onuachu, as he rediscovered his form and contributed to 21 goals in 25 matches, scoring 17 and providing four assists, despite a month-and-a-half injury layoff.
However, the 30-year-old has yet to make an appearance for the English club since his return, and was only named to the bench for the first time during their 3-0 loss to Bournemouth last Monday.
Martin highlights Onuachu's determination and training attitude
Ahead of Southampton's trip to Arsenal, Martin reflected on Paul Onuachu's determination to make an impact after a lengthy absence from the squad, praising the Nigeria international's recent efforts in training.
“Paul’s shown [his desire to make an impact],” he said. “Paul’s been out of the squad and was talked about leaving for however long. He’s now back on the bench because he deserves to be the way he trains.
“The hunger he trains with, the attitude, the mentality… I think it goes to show that no one is ever completely out, and it’s up to those guys to make sure they’re part of it.”
Martin's side is currently winless in six games, having suffered five defeats and one draw. They find themselves uncomfortably positioned in 19th place on the table, with no team scoring fewer goals than they have so far this season.
